Mississippi Braves News Release
Pensacola, FL - The Mississippi Braves built up an early lead with the wind blowing out and got great pitching down the stretch to hold on to a 3-2 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Thursday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
It all started in the first when Jose Martinez sent the first pitch he saw sailing into Pensacola Bay for his fourth home run of the season. The solo shot put the Braves (43-36; 5-4) ahead 1-0 early.
The Blue Wahoos (30-48; 5-4) came back to tie the game in the third. Second baseman Brodie Greene singled to lead off, and pitcher Daniel Renken walked. Shortstop Devin Lohman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the men up into scoring position, setting up an RBI groundout to second for rightfielder Yorman Rodriguez.
Mississippi came right back with the tie-breaker in the fourth inning. Edward Salcedo led off with his second walk of the game, stole second, and scored on a Christian Marrero ground rule double to make it 2-1. Jaime Pedroza then smoked a single to put men on the corners, and Barrett Kleinknecht's RBI fielder's choice made it 3-1.
Braves starter Gus Schlosser gave up just one run the rest of the way, allowing a solo home run to first baseman Marquez Smith to start the bottom of the fourth. The Wahoos were held at bay the rest of the game.
Schlosser (6-2) earned the win after allowing just two runs on five hits over five innings. He tied his season high in strikeouts with seven. The start likely was his last of June, in which he's gone an extraordinary 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in five starts.
Daniel Renken (2-6) took the loss for Pensacola, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.
After James Hoyt and Andrew Russell preserved the Braves lead in relief, Mark Lamm came on for his tenth save of the season, pitching a hitless and scoreless ninth to slam the door.
With the series even at two apiece, the Braves and Blue Wahoos will battle in Friday night's rubber match beginning at 7:00 PM CT. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (3-5, 3.86) gets the start for the Braves against Wahoos right-hander Josh Smith (5-6, 3.65). Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
