Stars fall despite Moye's complete game

Birminghman, AL. - Looking to salvage their final game of the year in their rival's home park, the Huntsville Stars did battle with the Birmingham Barons on Friday. In spite of pitcher Andy Moye's excellent effort, the Stars came up short by a score of 2-1. The Barons managed to escape with the win thru timely hitting and base running as well as a dominating performance by their pitching staff throughout much of the game.

The Barons struck first in the bottom of the third when Cody Puckett homered to center, putting Birmingham up 1-0 thru three innings. The Barons added to their lead in the sixth when Trayce Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Keenyn Walker who was on third by merit of a triple in the previous at-bat. This made the score 2-0 going into the seventh inning. The Stars got the bats going in the top half of the seventh when Mike Walker singled to right, bringing home Kentrail Davis, cutting the deficit in half going into the seventh inning stretch.

Unfortunately for Huntsville, Barons relief pitcher Kevin Vance did not allow the Stars to score again, picking up his third save of the season and sending Huntsville to another heart breaking defeat. The Stars fall to 5-7 in one run games this season.

Moye (3-9) took the loss, tossing a complete game, giving up seven hits and two runs. He struck out six while walking none. In four games against Birmingham this season, Moye has thrown twenty one innings, giving up four runs on sixteen hits and striking out sixteen while walking two.

Michael Nix (1-1) got the win for the Barons, going six and two thirds innings, giving up four hits and one run. He struck out six and walked one. Vance pitched the final two and a third innings, giving up no hits and striking out three.

Huntsville was led at the plate by Davis, who went one for two with two walks and a stolen base that lead to the only Stars run. Walker went one for four in the game with the lone RBI.

Puckett led Birmingham at the plate, going two for three including the homerun. Jared Mitchell also collected two hits, both of them being doubles. The Barons had six extra base hits on the night.

With the loss, the Stars fall to 31-47 on the year, 2-8 in the second half. The Barons improve to 50-30, 6-4 in the second half. The teams will resume their rivalry for the final time this year when Huntsville welcomes Birmingham to Joe Davis Stadium on July 10th thru 14th.

The Stars will next head home to start a five game series with the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:43 CT. Huntsville will be celebrating their mascot Homer the Polecat's birthday with events both before and during the game. It is also McDonald's Youth Sports Saturday at Joe Davis Stadium.
