Around the Horn: Wahoos Hold off Braves 7-6
June 28, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Blue Wahoos capitalized on heavy hitting and a stalwart defense to cement a 7-6 thriller over Mississippi in front of a capacity crowd. Fans braved stormy skies to mark Pensacola's sixteenth sellout in thirty-nine openings. With the win, the Blue Wahoos move into a two-way tie for first place in the Southern League South Division. Here are the highlights from tonight's triumph as we take a look Around the Horn:
LET THE CHIPS FALL: The first 2,000 fans through the gates on Fan Friday received poker chip key chains courtesy of Wind Creek Casino. The weekly promotion continues all season long with several giveaways left on the docket, returning on July 5 as the Wahoos host the Jackson Generals and presented as always by WEAR-TV3.
FIRE THE CANNON: The Wahoos scored early and often in the series finale with help from the long ball. Shortstop Devin Lohman was the first to leave the yard, swatting a solo shot to lead off the Wahoos' offense in his first at-bat. Marquez Smith smoked his second home run in as many nights in the third inning, while Travis Mattair drove his team-leading eleventh round-tripper two batters later.
HOLD YOUR HORSES: Pensacola possessed a six-run advantage after four innings, but the M-Braves posted a tremendous late-inning rally to close the gap. Dan Brewer's three-run home run in the seventh inning forced reliever Wilkin De La Rosa out of the game, while a sacrifice fly and wild pitch plated two more for Mississippi in the eighth. The M-Braves recorded seven hits in the final three frames.
PIZZA PARTY: With the Wahoos scoring more than five runs in tonight's game, fans can enjoy an incredible deal from Papa John's on Saturday. Fans can get 50% off online orders tomorrow by going to papajohns.com and using the promo code WAHOOS to redeem the offer.
The Wahoos (6-4) will hit the road for a five-game road trip starting Saturday against the Jacksonville Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM from the Baseball Grounds with "Countdown to First Pitch" airing at 5:00 PM on ESPN Radio.
