May 5, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - Alejandro Salazar laid down a safety squeeze bunt with one out scoring Drew Waters to break a 10th-inning scoreless tie, and the Mississippi Braves (15-13) completed a five-game series sweep by beating the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 1-0 Sunday.
By shutting out Jacksonville for the third time in the series, the M-Braves finished off just the fourth, five-game sweep in club history. The last came Aug. 22-26, 2014 against Birmingham at Trustmark Park.
Kyle Muller came away with a no-decision on Sunday afternoon, but the No. 13 overall prospect for the Atlanta Braves continued the stellar starting pitching in the series. Muller struck out four and walked three over 7.0 shutout innings, scattering five hits. The Dallas, Texas native worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning but ultimately cruised in his sixth start, throwing a season-high 103 pitches.
Starters Patrick Weigel, Joey Wentz, Tucker Davidson, Ian Anderson, and Muller combined to allow just two runs over 28.2 innings in the series, posting a 0.64 ERA. As a staff in the five-game series, Mississippi hurlers combined to give up just three runs in 46.0 innings, with 49 strikeouts, 14 walks, holding the Shrimp to a .173 batting average.
Claudio Custodio took over for the M-Braves after Muller, in the eighth, and dealt 2.0 shutout innings in his second appearance. Connor Johnstone (W, 1-0) was tasked in the 10th inning to keep Jacksonville off the board and he did. Magneuris Sierra bunted Anfernee Seymour to third base to open the 10th, then after an intentional walk of Brian Miller, Johnstone struck out J.C. Millan and got Joe Dunand to fly out.
Waters began the bottom of the 10th inning at second base and was quickly moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jonathan Morales. The Jumbo Shrimp intentionally walked Luis Valenzuela to get to Salazar. The M-Braves 22-year-old second baseman bunted the first pitch in front of the mound and Parker Bugg's (L, 0-1) valiant attempt to throw out Waters was unsuccessful.
The walk-off victory was the third this season at Trustmark Park and the shutout was the fifth dealt this season overall and third in seven games. The M-Braves have played a league-leading five extra-inning games and are now 4-1. The M-Braves are also now 7-3 in one-run games.
The M-Braves will begin the second leg of the 10-game homestand at Trustmark Park on Monday night, welcoming the first place Pensacola Blue Wahoos (20-10). The second-place M-Braves trail the Blue Wahoos by four games in the south division standings. RHP Patrick Weigel (0-1, 1.93) will make the start for the M-Braves against RHP Sean Poppen (2-1, 2.57). First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with coverage beginning at 6:20 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, MiLB First Pitch app. and MiLB.TV (subscription required).
