Mississippi Braves News Release

Jacksonville, FL - The Mississippi Braves saw a 6-2 lead in the 10th inning evaporate on Thursday night, dropping the series opener to the Jacksonville Suns 7-6 at Bragan Field.

David Adams dealt the final blow, hitting a walk-off three-run home run off Jorge Reyes (6-8) to lead the Suns (26-40, 55-80) to the victory.

The 10th inning started in a 2-2 tie after Kevin Ahrens hit a ninth-inning two-out RBI single for the Braves (35-30, 68-65), plating Eric Garcia to force free baseball.

In the 10th, the M-Braves pulled away against Suns reliever Juancito Martinez. Rio Ruiz and Matt Kennelly drew walks with one out, and Matt Lipka drove in the go-ahead run with a double for a 3-2 lead.

Martinez intentionally walked Garcia to load the bases, and Emerson Landoni hit a two-run single to make it 5-2. Fabian Williamson (2-0) came on and threw a wild pitch to score Garcia, a 6-2 lead.

But the Suns wouldn't go quietly. Reliever Tyler Jones walked Ryan Rieger and Danny Black, and Kenny Wilson clubbed an RBI single to pull it to 6-3.  Carlos Lopez followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 6-4, and Reyes came on in relief.

On the third pitch he threw, Adams ended it, sending a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall for the walkoff win.

Reyes took the loss and the blown save after Lucas Sims pitched a gem. Sims allowed just a run on three hits over seven frames, striking out seven and walking one.

Suns starter Chipper Smith left the game after facing just two batters due to injury trying to field a Levi Hyams infield hit.

Mississippi grabbed the initial lead in the sixth off reliever Alex Burgos, with Ruiz blasting a solo home run, his fifth, to make it 1-0.

Jacksonville tied the game in the seventh off Sims. Carlos Lopez drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on an Adams sacrifice bunt. Terrence Dayleg drove him home with an RBI single to make it 1-1.

Jacksonville took their first lead in the eighth. Rieger doubled off Ryne Harper to start the inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Hoo and scored on a Eudy Pina pinch-hit sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.

Pensacola fell 3-0 to Mobile Thursday night, holding the M-Braves a half-game back in second place while the BayBears pulled to just one game back in third with four games left to play.

The M-Braves and Suns battle in the second of five games on Friday night at 6:05 PM CT, with right-hander John Gant (4-0, 1.54) taking the hill for the Braves against Suns right-hander Scott Lyman (1-9, 6.41).
