Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons and starting pitcher Tyler Danish fell 4-3 to the Biscuits Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Both teams collected seven hits, but Montgomery starter Jacob Faria and the bullpen were able to hold onto a late-inning lead.
A second-inning surge from the Biscuits' offense gave them an early 3-0 lead. A one-out, two-run triple from Marty Gantt tacked on the first two runs, and he scored in the following at-bat on a Juniel Querecuto sacrifice fly. Montgomery's fourth run scored in the fourth with Gantt plating Jake Bauers on an RBI groundout.
Danish (8-12, 4.50 ERA) was charged with three earned runs, while the run in the fourth followed a fielding error. The right-hander received the loss after tossing seven innings allowing seven hits while striking out three.
Birmingham gained ground in the sixth and eighth innings to pull within one. Brian Fletcher smacked a two-out, solo home run off reliever Kyle McPherson. The Barons put up two runs two innings later against Montgomery's second reliever Matt Lollis. Marcus Lemon lined a two-run double to left in the eighth to score Danny Hayes and Joey DeMichele.
Despite the rally and a double from Jacob May in the ninth, Brad Schreiber closed out the contest in the final frame while striking out two. Schreiber was credited the save and Faria (7-3, 2.51 ERA) earned the win. Birmingham went to the bullpen just once as Kyle Hansen dealt a perfect eighth inning.
May finished the night 2-for-5 for the Barons, and Montgomery's Justin O'Conner and Thomas Coyle were each 2-for-3. Gantt led the Biscuits with three RBI, going 1-for-3 with three total bases.
ON DECK
Game two of the five-game series is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Right-hander Matt Heidenreich (1-1, 3.00 ERA) is set to face off against fellow right-hander Jaime Schultz (9-5, 3.78 ERA).
