Florence Y'alls News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - Florence recorded only three hits as a team, but one was a Joe Lytle home run. Evansville recorded just two hits as a team, but that is because Kevin Hahn was spectacular on the mound. That duo of Lytle and Hahn guided Florence past Evansville, 1-0, Tuesday night at Bosse Field.
The win gets the Y'alls (19-11) back within two games of first place in the Frontier League West Division. Evansville (21-9) drops the first game of the pivotal divisional matchup to even the season series at two wins apiece.
Each team went scoreless through the first five innings in what was a very well-pitched game. The only run in the game came across on Lytle's home run to the opposite field in the top of the sixth inning, his second long ball of the season. The hit diminishes what was otherwise a great start from Evansville right-hander Austin Gossman; it was the first earned run allowed by Gossman all season. He pitched 7.1 innings overall with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Unfortunately for Gossman, Hahn was just a little better. The righty lasted eight innings and gave up only two hits. He struck out five and walked none. It was the second time Hahn has gone eight innings in a ball game this season, matching his season-high of eight innings in a win at Southern Illinois on June 12. The only hits against Hahn came from Elijah MacNamee and Cristopher Pujols, and, with the addition of one batter reaching on an error, Hahn stranded all three runners to reach against him on the base paths.
Florence had chances to add some insurance runs. The Y'alls left eight runners on base, including a combined six runners over the final three innings. In the ninth most specifically, the Y'alls had the bases loaded with nobody out yet brought nobody home. That mattered little to Andrew McDonald, who struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his first save of his Florence career.
The Y'alls and the Otters return to action at Bosse Field tomorrow, Wednesday, June 30, for the second game of the three-game series. Hayden Wheeler gets the ball for the Y'alls opposed by Braden Scott. The left-handed pitchers battle will start at 6:35p CT / 7:35p ET.
