Augusta Lynx News Release

Augusta opened the 2005 portion of their calendar with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators in front of 3,047 cheering fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center on Saturday night.

Gwinnett opened the first period scoring at 9:18 with a Chris Durno marker from Rick Emmett and Kris Goodjohn to grab an early lead. Augusta came back, picking up where they left off the previous evening by scoring two straight power play goals in just over a minute and a half. Todd Bennett would notch both markers, the first from Jason Saal and Louis Goulet, the second from Jamie Johnson and Ken Magowan to give the Lynx a 2-1 lead after the opening frame.

Second period action saw Augusta stretch their lead to 3-1 on a Sean Connolly goal from Johnson and Jim Shepherd at 7:53, but Gwinnett kept the game close. Jeff Campbell scored on a loose puck in front after an odd bounce off the puck board behind the Lynx net to get the Gladiators back within a goal. Matt Dzieduszycki replied for the Lynx at 19:02 to grab the two goal lead back with assists from Shepherd and Johnson, giving the Lynx momentum at the break.

Final frame action dawned with both clubs seeing excellent scoring opportunities. Gwinnett would pull back within a goal at 3:04 on Durno's second marker of the game, an unassisted goal that somehow eluded Jason Saal in the Lynx net making it a 4-3 game. Gwinnett would continue to press, and even pulled netminder Sean Fields in the final minute, but to no avail. Augusta clung to their one-goal lead for the victory, improving to 10-16-3 on the season. Saal finished with 35 saves on the night for the Lynx, while Fields turned aside 17 Lynx shots for the loss.

The two teams will battle again Friday in Augusta and then Saturday in Gwinnett to finish up a three-game set, after which the Lynx return home to play Louisiana on Sunday at 4:05 pm. Tickets are available for $10, $13, and $14 through the Lynx office by calling (706) 724-4ICE, all TicketMaster locations, or on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
