Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Long Beach Ice Dogs certainly did not outplay the Victoria Salmon Kings on Friday. In fact they spent most of the third period running around in their own zone. None the less the Salmon Kings were unable to beat Olivier Michaud for the fourth time and the Ice Dogs won 4-3.

The Ice Dogs are a stingy defensive team, they frustrated the Salmon Kings offence several times on Michaud's doorstep with solid play down low. After a scoreless first period Long Beach notched the first marker at 8:08 of the second. Evan Cheverie got his eighth of the season silencing the capacity crowd at the Bear Mountain Arena.

It did not take long for the Salmon Kings to reply though. Nate Forster got his second of the season after NHL veteran Bill Lindsay went to the penalty box for interference. Forster's goal was set-up by newly appointed captain Brad Dexter and Ryan Finnerty.

Ice Dogs came back with a vengeance though scoring two more before the close of the second. Chris Kenady scored his team leading sixteenth of the season. Less than a minute later at 17:09 Cory Urquhart scored an even strength goal set-up by Burnaby native Paul Cardarelli.

The Ice Dogs up 3-1, Salmon Kings defenseman Dale Purinton marked his comeback from suspension half a minute later and Victoria was back knocking at the door.

Fourteen seconds into the third Ice Dog Nathan Martz pushed the puck and Jason Stone across the goal-line and again they extended their lead to two. Once again the third period proved to be the Salmon Kings best period of hockey, pouring on the offence in waves.

At 8:33 Blue Bennefield pushed the puck passed a sprawling Michaud and Victoria again had life. They did not let up, and neither did Michaud, making several outstanding saves in the frame.

The Salmon Kings out-shot the Ice Dogs 33-29 in the hard-hitting, fast skating 4-3 loss. Victoria takes on Long Beach for the second of the three game set, on New Years Day at the Bear Mountain Arena, game time is 7:00 p.m. PST.
