Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus has been named to the 2007 Western Conference All-Star team as a reserve, the Women's National Basketball Association announced today in New York. The All-Star reserves are selected by coaches in their respective conferences. Coaches could not vote for players on their own team.
"It is truly an honor to be named to the All-Star team for the second straight season," Augustus said. "I'm excited to go to Washington, D.C., and represent my family, the Minnesota Lynx franchise and all Minnesota Lynx fans."
Augustus, the first overall pick of the 2006 WNBA Draft and 2006 WNBA Rookie of the Year, currently is second in the league in scoring (22.3 ppg), and ranks 7th in field goal percentage (.509), 11th in 3-point field-goal percentage (.400) and 8th in minutes played (32.9 mpg).
Earlier this season, Augustus also became the second-fastest player in WNBA history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone, falling just one game shy of Cynthia Cooper's record of 44 games.
"We are extremely proud of Seimone for being selected to the All-Star team by the other coaches in the Western Conference, " Lynx head coach Don Zierden said. "She is truly one of the top players in the world, and it is nice to see her get some recognition for that. There is room for improvement for her, and that is what is encouraging for us. Her commitment to excellence leaves no doubt that she will continue to strive to make this team a championship contender for years to come."
Joining Augustus on the 2007 Western Conference All-Star team are: Starters - Sue Bird (G - Seattle Storm), Becky Hammon (G - San Antonio Silver Stars), Diana Taurasi (F - Phoenix Mercury), Lauren Jackson (F - Seattle Storm), Yolanda Griffith (C - Sacramento Monarchs); Reserves -Rebekkah Brunson (F - Sacramento Monarchs), Taj McWilliams-Franklin (C - Los Angeles Sparks), Cappie Pondexter (G - Phoenix Mercury), Penny Taylor (G - Phoenix Mercury), Tina Thompson (F - Houston Comets).
Bird will miss the game after having arthroscopic knee surgery last week.
The 2007 WNBA All-Star Game Presented by Discover will be played at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, July 15, at 2:30 p.m. CDT and will be broadcast on ABC. By hosting the 2007 All-Star Game, Washington, which also hosted the game in 2002, will join New York (1999, 2003, 2006) as the only cities to stage multiple WNBA All-Star games.
WNBA players will be extremely visible around town during All-Star Weekend, participating in community outreach initiatives that will leave lasting and positive impressions in the Washington, D.C. area. Several projects will take place, including the Nike/WNBA Court Refurbishment and the opening of a Reading and Learning Center through the WNBA Cares Legacy Event in conjunction with Toyota.
Also on July 15, select WNBA players will again compete against each other in the Dribble, Dish & Swish Skills Challenge as well as the Three-Point Shoot Out, both of which are sponsored by adidas and included in the price of admission to the All-Star Game.
