Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Colton Fretter posted his 34th goal of the season to set a new Gladiators team record for most goals in a season midway through the second period but it wasn't enough to help the Gladiators past the Augusta Lynx in a 7-4 loss on Sunday afternoon. Gwinnett falls to 28-14-6 on the season in the loss.
Scott Lehman's second goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead on the Lynx 6:39 into the first period. Trailing the play, Lehman took a pass from Chad Painchaud in slot and beat Augusta netminder Nathan Marsters for the shorthanded marker. Mike Vigilante also had a helper on the goal for Gwinnett.
Augusta tied the game at one just seconds after a power play expired. Mike Erickson deflected a shot from the point past Gladiators goaltender Dan Turple at the 7:48 mark of the first period. Nick Kuiper and Trevor Gillies collected the assists on the goal for the Lynx.
Scott Mifsud pushed the Gladiators back into the lead with his 19th goal of the season at the 12:26 mark of the first period on the power play. Mifsud ripped a slpashot off the cross bar and into the back of the net for the marker. Brad Schell and Jamie Milam hooked up for the helpers on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Augusta exploded for four straight goals early in the second period to take a 5-2 lead on the Gladiators. Shane Hynes tied the game at two just 56 seconds into the second period tapping the puck past Turple for the marker. Ryan Lang and Louis Goulet collected the assists on the goal for Augusta.
The Lynx took a 3-2 lead at the 2:37 mark of the second period as Lang found a loose puck sitting in the slot and ripped the puck past Turple for the go-ahead goal. Goulet and Garrett Bembridge had the assists on the goal for the Gladiators.
Brian Passmore pushed the Lynx lead to 4-2 at the 6:23 mark of the second period as he was able to capitalize in the slot for the marker. Hynes and Blanchard hooked up for the assists on the goal for Augusta.
Augusta then took a 5-2 lead on Passmore's second goal of the night. Corralling the puck in the left wing circle, Passmore beat Turple for the power play marker at the 8:42 mark of the second period. Hynes and Blanchard again collected the assists on the goal for Augusta.
Gwinnett got back within two on Colton Fretter's 34th goal of the season at the 14:44 mark of the second period on the power play. Matt York collected an assist on the power play goal as he flipped the puck to a waiting Fretter in the slot. Scott Mifsud also had an assist on the goal for the Gladiators. Fretter's marker set a new Gladiators team record for most goals in a season.
Schell cut the Lynx lead to one goal at the 7:49 mark of the third period as he ripped a slapshot from the high slot past Marsters for the marker. Vigilante and Jamie Milam collected the assists on the goal for the Gladiators.
Augusta regained the two-goal advantage on a marker from Aaron Slattengren. The goal came at 11:58 of the final period as Slattengran capitalized on a Gladiators defensive turnover at the blue line before ripping a slapshot past Turple for the marker. Ryan Petz picked up an assist on the tally.
Lang added an empty net goal for the Lynx to push Augusta's lead to 7-4 with 1:26 left in the third period. Nathan Saunders fed Lang in the neutral zone to set up the goal.
Turple finished with 29 saves in the game as Gwinnett went 2-for-8 on the power play in the loss.
