Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Mike Scott scored twice as the Alaska Aces established a new team record with their 12th straight victory at home, crushing the Phoenix Roadrunners, 6-1, Sunday in front of 5,252.
The Aces had won 11 in a row at Sullivan Arena four times previously in their 12-year history as a professional club, and with the sweep of the RoadRunners, have now gone 17-1-1 at home since opening the year 3-5, including a four-game losing streak. Alaska won its three games against Phoenix by a combined 17-4, and in six wins over two years against the Roadrunners at Sullivan, the Aces have piled up 32 goals against eight for the visitors.
Barrett Heisten opened the scoring Sunday with his fourth goal of the series, and 16th of the year, at 8:29 of the first period. As they did last night (also in a 6-1 loss), Phoenix rallied to tie the score on Cam Paddock's goal at 13:49. He scored three of the four goals that the RoadRunners managed this weekend. A Phoenix turnover led to Scott's first goal with 4:50 left in the period, and Alaska broke the game open with a pair of power play goals in the final minute, Peter Metcalf's 10th of the season in a five-on-three situation at 19:11, and Scott's second of the night 34 seconds later. The Aces have racked up 22 power play goals in their last 10 games, and headed to the locker room with a commanding 4-1 lead.
Patrick Wellar took a pass from Kevin Croxton and scored his seventh goal of the season at 8:44 of the second period, and Vladimir Novak matched his career-high with his 16th of the year eight minutes later to close out the scoring.
Rookie Isaac Reichmuth made eight of his 20 saves on the night in a scoreless third period. Alaska out-shot Phoenix 28-13 in the first 40 minutes and 35-21 for the game.
The Aces have won 10 of their last 11 overall, including five in a row, and 16 of 18. At 35-12-2 for the season, Alaska leads the entire ECHL by nine points. The league's second-place team, Las Vegas (Pacific Division leaders at 26-9-11 after a Sunday win over Stockton), welcomes the Aces Tuesday night at Orleans Arena in the opener of a two-week road trip for Alaska. The Wranglers swept the Aces in a three-game series played in Anchorage in mid-November. Tuesday's game starts at 6:05 p.m. AST, with live coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the flagship home of Alaska Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM.
