LYNCHBURG, VA (AUGUST 23, 2010) - One big inning was enough for Lynchburg on Monday night as the Hillcats beat the Dash 5-0 in a game that was shortened to seven-plus innings because of rain. Lynchburg scored all of its runs in the third inning against Stephen Sauer to win the first game of the four-game series.
Both starting pitchers were impressive in the first two innings. Josh Ravin struck out four men and allowed just one hit while Sauer faced the minimum over the first two frames.
The bottom of the Hillcats lineup got to Sauer (7-10) in the third, as Josh Fellhauer, Kevin Coddington, and Miguel Rojas singled to load the bases. Brodie Greene then chopped a ball to third baseman Jon Gilmore, who tagged third base for one out while Fellhauer scored the first run of the ballgame. With Cody Puckett at the plate, Lynchburg (27-28, 56-69) pulled off a successful double steal to put two men in scoring position. Puckett then walked to re-load the bases.
Neftali Soto followed with the biggest hit of the inning, a double to left field that scored Rojas and Greene. Ozzie Lewis' throw to the infield was off-line, allowing Puckett to score and moving Soto to third base. Chris Richburg singled to left to drive in Soto and make it 5-0 Hillcats.
Winston-Salem (27-27, 70-53) had its best scoring opportunity in the sixth inning against a tiring Ravin (2-0). Seth Loman was hit by a pitch with one out and was retired when Lewis grounded into a force out. Luis Sierra singled and Logan Johnson walked to load the bases with two outs. Ravin was then relieved by Blair Carson, who was got Drew Garcia to hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to end the threat.
A light rain began falling in the top of the eighth inning. Carson retired the first two batters before Sierra reached on a dropped fly ball. As the rain picked up, the umpiring crew cleared the field, which was soon covered by the tarp. After a 30-minute delay, the game was officially ended early as the rain continued to fall.
Ravin won the game with 5.2 scoreless innings. He has yet to allow an earned run in three Carolina League starts. Sauer took the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits in six innings. Carson picked up his first save by working out of the sixth inning jam.
The game marked the sixth time this season Winston-Salem has been shut out and the second time against the Hillcats. After losing their first nine games to the Dash, Lynchburg has won three of its last four against Winston. It was the 'Cats' first home win against the Dash this season.
The series continues on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when RHP Dylan Axelrod (6-2, 2.20) opposes LHP Justin Walker (3-1, 6.75). The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
