Potomac Nationals News Release
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals were three outs away from a huge series-opening victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. But Wilmington tied the game in the ninth and won it with three runs in the 14th inning, and moved to within half a game of first-place Potomac with a 6-3 extra inning win. Ernesto Mejia drove in five of the six runs for Wilmington, including a two-run triple in the 14th.
Mejia hit a homer to left center that hit off the bottom of the scoreboard give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead. It was his fifth of the year for Wilmington.
Potomac came back in the bottom of the third against Wilmington starter Ivor Hodgson. In his first four starts against the Nationals this year, Hodgson had posted a miniscule 1.85 ERA. With one out, Nick Moresi doubled down the left field line to tie it up 1-1. He scored on a double from Francisco Soriano. Derek Norris knocked in Soriano and Potomac took a 2-1 advantage.
The P-Nats scored again in the bottom on the fifth on one swing of the bat from Robby Jacobsen. He reached third on a line drive to the wall misplayed by Patrick Norris for a triple. He then advanced home on a throwing error by Rey Navarro that ended up over the Wilmington dugout and Potomac led 3-1.
Rosenbaum was extremely efficient in six giving up just one hit - the homer to Mejia. He struck out four, walked one and faced just one over the minimum throwing only 65 total pitches.
Rob Wort relieved Rosenbaum and threw two scoreless innings scattering two hits. The Blue Rocks did come back in the ninth against Justin Phillabaum. Lead-off batter Patrick Norris singled, Christian Colon was hit by a pitch and Wil Myers walked to load the bases with no one out. Ernesto Mejia singled into left to score Norris and Colon to tie the game 3-3.
Pat McCoy came in with runners at first and second and no one out. He struck out Nick Francis then got Salvador Perez to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning without any more damage.
There were no bullpen troubles from Wilmington's Brendan Lafferty as he went four scoreless including a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth that sent the game to extra innings. He yielded just one base runner on a bloop single by Tyler Moore.
The Rocks did belt a double and a single in the tenth. However, a couple of base running blunders erased both Wilmington base runners and McCoy got through the tenth unscathed.
Potomac mounted a rally in the tenth but stranded Robby Jacobsen on second.
Game two of the series is tomorrow night starting at 7:03 p.m. Wilmington sends lefty Will Smith (2-1, 3.69) to face Trevor Holder (2-2, 3.74). Call our ticket office at 703-590-2311 for tickets or visit www.potomacnationals.com.
