August 23, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release
Just 1 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with 15 games to play, the K-Tribe begins their final homestand of the season vs. Frederick tonight at Historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston will be home through Sunday, game time tonight - 7pm
Series Win at the Beach - Kinston's four-run first inning led to a 9-2 win in a rain-shortened rubber game on Sunday at Myrtle Beach. The game was stopped in the top of the seventh inning. Juan Diaz hit a two-run double to cap the four-run first, and the K-Tribe added four more in the sixth, including a two-run single by Abner Abreu. Joe Gardner collected his league-leading 11th win. Kinston moved to 9-7 in rubber games and took the season series from the Pelicans 12-8.
It's Not How You Start - With 15 games left in the season, the K-Tribe is just 1 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division. Kinston is two games behind first place and first half champion Winston-Salem. This season, winning the second half means more; if Winston-Salem sweeps both the first and second half they will get games 1,2 and if necessary 5 at home. If one of the other three teams in the division wins the second half, games 3 through 5 will be at their home.
A Civil War - The K-Tribe's road to a second half Southern Division title will run through the North. 12 of Kinston's last 15 games this season are against Northern Division teams (eight with Frederick and four with Potomac). A short three-game series at Historic Grainger Stadium against Salem this weekend is the only battle with a Southern Division team.
Final Countdown - Tonight is the first game of a seven-game homestand, the final homestand of the season for the K-Tribe. They will play four against Frederick and three against Salem. The Indians are 36-26 at home this season.
