Ronnie Welty's three-run homer capped a four-run sixth inning for Frederick in a 6-4 win over Kinston on Monday night at Grainger Stadium. The loss drops the Indians two games back in the race for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division.
The Keys got to Kinston starter Austin Adams in the top of the first inning when Kyle Hudson singled, stole second then scored on a Ronnie Welty RBI single. The K-Tribe
tied the score at one in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a solo home run from Chun Chen. The home run was the fourth in a K-Tribe uniform for Chen.
Adams was chased from the game in the top of the fourth inning when Buck Britton gave Frederick a 2-1 lead with a solo home run. Adams (4-1) surrendered two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two in his first loss with the K-Tribe.
Frederick blew open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning off of Kinston reliever David Roberts. Roberts gave up four hits in the inning, including a three-run home run from Ronnie Welty. Roberts allowed five runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Keys' starter Oliver Drake shut down the K-Tribe offense, holding them to a run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Drake (5-6) walked three and struck out three.
Kinston struck for a run in the eighth against Keys' reliever Brett Jacobsen. Bo Greenwell reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on catcher's indifference. Kyle Bellows hit an RBI single to right to score Greenwell and cut the lead to 6-2.
The K-Tribe started a rally in the ninth, as Abner Abreu led off with a double and scored on a Juan Diaz RBI single. Donnie Webb walked. Jeremie Tice flew out to the warning track in center for the second out. Bo Greenwell then bounced an RBI single to right to pull the K-Tribe within 6-4. Karexon Sanchez came to the plate as the go-ahead run, but grounded out to end the game.
Travis Turek threw three hitless innings in an outstanding relief appearance for the K-Tribe.
The K-Tribe continues their final homestand of the season with a $2 Tuesday at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 7pm as Marty Popham will take the mound for the K-Tribe.
