RHP Ryohei Tanaka (8-4, 3.54) vs LHP Chris Masters (7-5, 3.28)
THE HILLCATS: Wednesday, the 'Cats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 4-3...LHP Dimasther Delgado went six innings for Lynchburg, allowing just one run and would earn the win...Andrelton Simmons led the offense, falling a double shy of the cycle, driving in one run with his first home run of the season, and scoring two runs...The 'Cats nearly blew it in the eighth, allowing two runs to let the Dash within one...Andy Wilkins just missed a homer that would have tied the game, but Keenan Wiley made a leaping catch at the wall, and eventually the 'Cats got out of the inning and held on to win...The Hillcats are currently in third place in the Northern Division at 22-30, 11.0 games back of the Frederick Keys in first place...
VS. FREDERICK: The Hillcats are 8-8 against the Keys this season...This will be the final series between the two teams this season...So far, Frederick has won both previous series in Lynchburg 2-1, but the Hillcats took 6 of 10 games in Frederick this season, making the road team 10-6 on the season series...
STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Lynchburg snapped a three-game losing streak Tuesday night, and have now won two in a row and 11 of their last 18...They are still five games back of a playoff spot, chasing the Potomac Nationals in the Northern Division...The Hillcats have 17 games left this season to the Nationals 18 games...The 'Cats had a game canceled last weekend, so barring any more weather, there will be no tie...The two teams still have four head-to-head match-ups left...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Atlanta Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes C Christian Bethancourt (12), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
I REMEMBER MY FIRST BOMB: SS Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-5 last night with an RBI and two runs scored...He was a double short of the cycle...It was the first time a Hillcat had tripled and homered in the same game all season...The homer was his first this year, and came on his 450th at-bat of the season...His last blast came August 17, 2010, exactly one year prior, with the Danville Braves against the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League...He went 468 at-bats without a homer, and now has three in his career (all solo)...
CLUTCH PEFORMER: RHP Eliecer Cardenas went a season high four and one-third innings Tuesday night in relief, allowing just one earned run...Down to 12 pitchers after losing starter Blaine Sims, and after playing 15 innings the night before, the extended outing was a huge help...It was his first earned run allowed since June 23rd...He had made 15 consecutive appearances without an earned run, tossing 19.2 innings in that span...He entered the game in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs and went on to finish the game...It was the first time he had seen action in as early as the fifth inning this year...Cardenas' previous season high was two and one-third innings...
GET'EM ON: OF L.V. Ware went 0-for-4 last night, and did not reach base, snapping a 14-game on-base streak...During the streak he hit ..326 (15-for-46) with three doubles, two triples, and two home runs...He's also been walked five times and hit twice...His raised his average from .242 to .254 and on-base percentage from .309 to .325...He's currently hitting .297 in August with eight RBI, just three shy of his best monthly total this season with 14 days left...
PUT HIM ON THE BOARD....YES: OF Keenan Wiley was called up from Low-A Rome on April 25th...He played in his 88th game with the Hillcats last night, going 1-for-3 with a walk...With those four plate appearances he finally caught up to the minimum necessary to qualify among the league leaders...He is hitting .288 which places him third behind teammate Andrelton Simmons and former Winston-Salem Dash outfielder Jose Martinez who is now in AA and will no longer qualify after the Dash play two more games...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Ryohei Tanaka was signed as a minor league free agent by the Orioles on April 29, 2009 out of Komatsu City, Ishikawa, Japan...He spent his first two professional seasons in Bowie, and became the first Japanese-born player in Baysox history...He led the Baysox with eight wins in 2010...Transferred to Frederick on May 2 after 6 relief appearances with Bowie...Split time between the rotation and bullpen...Pitched two innings, giving up one hit in relief appearance on May 11 in Lynchburg...Started June 29 in Lynchburg...Gave up three runs on nine hits in six innings in no-decision...Pitched against the Hillcats in Frederick on August 2...gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings...Currently 8-4 with a 3.54 ERA with Frederick...
