Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A big crowd turned out on Thursday, but they saw a rough homestand opener for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Jeremie Tice's two-run homer in the first inning and a second inning three-run double by Jordan Casas led the Kinston Indians to a 9-3 victory over the Birds in front of 5,143 at BB&T Coastal Field.

The Kinston win, coupled with Winston-Salem's 4-3 loss at Potomac, vaulted the Indians into first place in the Carolina League Southern Division. Kinston holds a half-game lead on the Dash while the Pelicans sit five games behind in third place.

After the start of the game was delayed by 34 minutes die to rain, the K-Tribe jumped out to an early lead against Pelicans starter Kennil Gomez. With two down in the first inning, Tice cracked a towering home run to give Kinston a 2-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach got one run back in the bottom of the first when Jimmy Swift scored on a wild pitch, but the Indians rallied again in the second, loading the bases without a hit. An error, walk and hit by pitch set up Casas's two-out knock, a double into the right-center field gap that plated three and made it a 5-1 game.

Andrew Clark kept up his hot hitting in the third, driving a double that scored Jared Prince from first base to cut the lead to 5-2, but Kinston added two more in the fifth to break it open. Casey Frawley's RBI double knocked out Gomez (2-4), who allowed seven runs, four earned, in four and two-thirds innings. Joe Ortiz entered the game and Justin Toole greeted him with a single to score Frawley and increase the lead to 7-2.

Marty Popham (5-2) was solid for five innings to pick up the win. The righty held the Pelicans to two runs on four hits before Chris Jones kept up the good pitching for Kinston. Jones put up zeroes in the sixth and seventh before Vinny DiFazio launched a long homer for a rare Myrtle Beach offensive bright spot.

Back-to-back errors in the seventh inning let the K-Tribe post an unearned run against reliever Trevor Hurley. Colby Killian worked a scoreless eighth and Ryan Rodebaugh pitched the ninth, allowing a solo homer to Roberto Perez.

The series continues on Friday night as Pelicans right-hander Justin Grimm (4-2, 3.39) squares off against Kinston southpaw T.J. House (6-11, 4.94). Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
