Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (AUGUST 18, 2011) - With the assistance of umpires John Bacon and Ben Leake, the Potomac Nationals scored a 4-3 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The umpiring crew made two critical calls that appeared to be incorrect late in the game that gave the P-Nats a run and took one away from Winston.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Nick Ciolli doubled and got to third base with one out. After Mike Blanke struck out for the second out of the inning, pinch hitter Kevin Dubler hit a ground ball deep in the hole to the shortstop. Francisco Soriano fielded and his throw appeared late to first base, but base umpire Ben Leake called Dubler out to end the game, denying Ciolli the chance to score the tying run from third base.
In the sixth inning, the Nationals (28-25, 57-65) were awarded a run on another questionable call. Leading 3-2 with two outs, and a man at first, Soriano hit a ground ball that appeared to be foul down the right field line. Home plate umpire John Bacon called it fair, much to first baseman Andy Wilkins displeasure, and Sean Nicol scored from first base when the relay from right fell out of the glove of Blanke at the plate.
The Dash (29-24, 61-62) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning against Nats starter Sammy Solis. Winston left men in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but avoided doing so in the third. Tyler Saladino doubled to left field and scored on a Jared Mitchell base hit to right to give the Dash the game's first lead.
The P-Nats tied it up with a hit parade in the fourth against Cameron Bayne. Five straight Nationals collected hits off Bayne (11-6), leading to three runs and giving Potomac its first lead.
Winston got one of those runs back in the fifth when Saladino tripled home Daniel Wagner from second base to cut the Nationals lead to 3-2. It was the third extra-base hit of the night for Saladino, who has ten total hits in his last three games.
Potomac scored its controversial run in the sixth, which was followed up by Kyle Colligan's solo home run in the seventh to make it a one-run game once again.
Clegg (4-5) was given the win with 2.2 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits while Bayne suffered his second straight defeat. Nelo earned his 16th save in 19 chances this season with a scoreless ninth.
Adding insult to injury, Dubler's nine-game hitting streak ended with the controversial game-ending groundout to shortstop.
The four-game series continues on Friday when RHP Jake Petricka (3-6, 4.04) opposes RHP Paul Demny (8-10, 4.76) in a 7:05 p.m. start. The audio broadcast of the game begins at 6:45 at www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for their final home stand of the 2011 regular season on Friday, August 26. Winston-Salem will host Myrtle Beach in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
