Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick had an unusually shoddy night in the field as the Keys committed five errors leading to four unearned runs as Lynchburg grabbed the opening game of the four-game series 5-2. With the loss Keys Manager Orlando Gomez remains one win behind former Manager Bien Figeuroa (2005-06) on the club's all-time managerial win's list.
The Keys grabbed an early lead but it did not last long. RF Steve Bumbry started the game with a bang, leading off the contest with a solo home run to right field to put Frederick atop 1-0. Lynchburg would answer in the second inning as with a runner at second base and one out, Keys SS Manny Machado could not handle a tricky hop. The fielding error led to two Lynchburg runs.
Frederick tied the game in the third inning but it would not last long. With two outs Machado laced a double down the right field line. Next up was LF Kipp Schutz who powered a double to the center field wall scoring Machado with ease to knot the score at 2-apiece. The Hillcats answered quickly though as CF Todd Cunningham doubled off of the first pitch of the bottom of the third inning. Another Machdo error on a slow roller that went under his glove clouded the situation and Lynchburg scored two more runs.
Down 5-2 in the seventh inning the Keys loaded the bases with two outs but Schutz hit a hard comebacker to pitcher Andrew Russell and the threat was fruitless.
Potomac defeated Winston-Salem 4-3 in Woodbridge, VA so the Keys lead in the division is now five games. Potomac leads Lynchburg by five games for the wild card, and a chance to take on the Keys in the Northern Division Championship Series.
The Keys continue its four-game series in Lynchburg Friday, August 19th as LHP Rick Zagone will take the hill for his fifth start with Frederick in 2011. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and coverage will begin 20 minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source.
Frederick will return home for its final regular season homestand of 2011 Monday, August 22nd at 7:00 p.m. It will be the final Kids Eat Free Monday of 2011! Also Playoff tickets are currently available for the Keys attempted run at the Mills Cup. For tickets contact the Keys at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
