THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg held on for a 7-6 victory in the deciding game of a three-game series at Kinston...The Hillcats completed their stretch of 13 games in a row on the road with a 5-8 mark...After completing their longest stretch of consecutive road games all season last night, tonight the Cats begin a 10-game homestand and a three-game series with Potomac...Tonight they try and win back-to-back games for the first time since the first two games of the season...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 1-2 against the Nationals thus far this season after they dropped the series at Pfitzner Stadium last weekend...Lynchburg is 155-147 against Potomac all-time and are 83-71 in the Hill City...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9 and were 5-5 at the Pfitz...
IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: Last night Lynchburg won their first series finale, rubber match and series of the season with their 7-6 victory over Kinston...Lynchburg entered last night's game 0-5 in series finales, 0-3 in rubber matches and 0-4-1 in series...Before last night's finale the Hillcats were 4-0 in road series openers and 5-1 in game one of series, but were also 0-8 in road games that have followed the series opener and 2-11 overall after the first game of the set...
HOME AGAIN HOME AGAIN JIGGETY JIG: Lynchburg completed a stretch of 13 straight road games last night, the longest stretch on the road they will have all season...Over the course of 14 days (including one off-day), the team traveled either to or from a road city on 10 of those days (including two and from Salem for their four-game series)...They traveled a total of 1,624 miles over the course of the 13 games on the road...
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE: The Hillcats walked a season-high five times last night and two of those five base runners came around to score...Lynchburg has still walked just 42 times this season in 20 games, the lowest amount in the Carolina League by 25 base on balls...Lynchburg is fourth in the CL with a .255 batting average, but they are last in the circuit with a .306 on-base percentage and last in runs scored with 76 (3.8 per game)...
BULLPEN BATTLES: The Hillcats bullpen allowed four runs in three innings last night...All four runs came in the bottom of the ninth inning to trim the Cats lead to one and the tying run was in scoring position...On Wednesday the pen allowed five runs in two and 2/3 innings of work, blew a save and got the loss in the 5-3 defeat...Wednesday was the fourth time in the last six games Lynchburg was tied or leading going into the seventh inning and lost...The pen is now 1-7 with a 6.58 ERA and three blown saves...They also have issued 37 walks and 67 innings pitched...
WELCOME ABOARD: OF Byron Wiley joins the Hillcats today from Low-A Dayton, where he was batting .209 with four home runs and nine RBI in 19 games with the Dragons...Last year with Dayton he hit .275 with 12 dingers and 64 RBI in 110 games...He was fifth in the Midwest League in walks (76) and on-base percentage (.395)...
TONE SETTER: OF Josh Fellhauer went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run in last night's game to extend his hitting streak to a season-high ten games...Over that time he is batting .333 (13-for-39) over that time with four doubles, a home run, five RBI and seven runs scored...He led off two games on the road swing with a home run...He has matched INF Carlos Mendez for the longest hit streak of the season for the Hillcats, as he hit in the first ten games he played in this season...
MORE NIMBLE THAN YOU THINK: C Devin Mesoraco went 2-for-3 last night with an RBI, a run and a walk...He laid down his first bunt single of the season and stole his first two bags of the campaign...He did not steal a base all of last season...He also absorbed a crushing blow by an Indians runner trying to score and held on to the ball for the out to keep it a 3-2 lead for the Hillcats in the fifth inning...On the road swing the Cats catcher went 14-for-42 (.333) with three doubles, four homers, seven RBI, four walks, two steals and he got hit by a pitch three times...He leads the team with four home runs and 12 RBI...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Marcos Frias was signed by the Nationals in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic..He made his professional debut in 2007 with the Dominican Nationals...In 2008 he worked for the GCL Nationals and went 3-4 with a 2.92 ERA in 13 games (nine starts)...Last season he advanced to full season Low-A and posted a 9-5 mark with a 2.91 ERA in 25 games (23 starts)...This season with the P-Nats he has no decisions and a 3.92 ERA in four starts thus far this season...His last outing was against the Hillcats, and he went five innings, gave up two runs (one earned) and took a no-decision in a game the Nationals came back and won 4-3 at Pfitzner Stadium...
