First Inning Outburst Leads Hillcats To Victory

The Hillcats exploded for six runs in the first inning and never looked back, beating the Nationals 8-2 to open up a 3-game series.

After 13 games on the road, the Cats came back home and got off to a red-hot start against Potomac starter Marcos Frias. Lynchburg led off the bottom of the first inning with five straight hits. Eight of the first nine hitters reached base, and the Hillcats batted around in an inning for the first time this season.

Neftali Soto got the Cats on the board first with a two-run single. Josh Fellhauer and Cody Puckett scored and Soto moved to third on a throwing error by Brian Peacock. Soto scored on Carlos Mendez's single. Mendez had three hits on the evening.

Devin Mesoraco followed Mendez with his fifth home run of the season, his first at City Stadium. Justin Reed also picked up an RBI in the first frame. Reed had another RBI in the sixth after knocking a one-out double off the wall.

Matt Fairel battled through illness to earn his third win of the season. He threw five innings and gave up only two earned runs and struck out three. The lefty moves to 3-0 on the season, all wins coming at home. The bullpen held the Nationals scoreless the rest of the way.

Lynchburg continues its 10-game home stand tomorrow night against Potomac. City Stadium will host the 2nd Annual Autism Awareness Night sponsored by Physician's Treatment Center. Half the cost of each ticket will be donated to Commonwealth Autism Services. Last year's event raised over $3,000. The game starts at 6:05. The Hillcats send righty Scott Carroll to the mound for his first start of the season against Nationals righty Brad Peacock.
