Potomac Nationals News Release

(MYRTLE BEACH, SC) The Potomac Nationals won their second consecutive series with a come from behind, extra-innings victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Thursday night. The lead changed hands four times from the eighth inning onward, the last time on a Dan Nelson ground out in the tenth that was just enough to secure a 5-4 win.

The late-inning drama was due in large part to shaky defensive play. In the eighth with the game tied at two, Robinson Fabian hit Gerry Rodriguez with one out. Rodriguez then advanced to third base on a wild pitch - even though he appeared to be thrown out by Ty Weeden. After an intentional walk to to Gerardo Avila, Jesus Sucre hit a ground ball back up the middle that clipped off Fabian's glove. Fabian regrouped and was able to make the play at first, but Rodriguez scored to give the Pelicans a one-run lead.

In the ninth, the Nationals got started with one out. Dan Nelson worked a five pitch walk to bring Will Ortiz to the plate. Ortiz hit a rocket up the middle that caromed off Jaye Chapman's glove and came to rest on the infield. Ortiz and Nelson moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Nelson then scored to tie the game on a second pitch to the backstop. Weeden was walked, and Chris Curran hit a sacrifice fly to right to give Potomac its first lead since the opening inning.

But it was not going to be a routine win for the P-Nats. Dan Leatherman came on to relieve Fabian, and leading off the tenth, Shayne Moody hit a line drive to center than Curran misplayed. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Cole Miles tied the game with a base hit to left.

The Nats took another lead in the tenth - without getting a base hit. With one out, Mike Burgess was hit by a Van Pope fastball. Tyler Moore and Tim Pahuta then walked to load the bases for Nelson. The designated hitter hit a soft grounder up the middle and the Pelicans could only get the out at second. The hustling Nelson beat the throw to first and it was 5-4.

Myrtle Beach threatened in the tenth and got the tying run to second base before Leatherman fanned Adam Milligan to lock down the win.

The game looked like it would be a slugfest in the first inning. Burgess hit is first home run of 2010, an opposite field shot that gave Potomac a 2-0 lead. Avila tied it with a shot to left of his own. From that point on, both Evan Bronson and Randall Delgado settled in and pitched five scoreless innings.

Potomac opens a three-game series in Lynchburg tomorrow night at 6:05. Marcos Frias will battle against the lefty Matt Fairel. The broadcast can be heard on potomacnationals.com beginning at 5:50.
