THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg was blanked in a 3-0 loss to Potomac last night in the series opener of a four-game series at City Stadium...The Hillcats have now dropped seven of their last eight games and have matched their low-water mark of 11 games under .500...Tonight is game two of a four-game series with Potomac and the second contest in a seven-game homestand for the Cats...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 3-4 against the Nationals thus far this season with both teams taking a series on their home field...Lynchburg is 157-149 against Potomac all-time and are 85-73 in the Hill City...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9 and were 6-4 at Calvin Falwell Field...
ROAD TO RECOVERY: RHP Edinson Volquez is scheduled to start for the Hillcats on Saturday night in a rehabilitation start...In 2008 he was the Reds' lone representative in the National League All-Star game...He was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA with 206 strikeouts in 196 innings...The righty last threw June 1, 2009 for the Reds against St. Louis...He missed the rest of last season and had reconstructive elbow surgery August 3...Volquez was 4-2, with a 4.35 ERA in nine starts with Cincinnati last year...On April 20, Volquez was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program...His suspension ends Sunday, and he will be pitching under a rehab assignment while under suspension..
TOMMY, HAVE YOU MET JOHN? Tonight's starting pitcher RHP James Avery missed the first part of this season and the majority of last year after having Tommy John Surgery on his throwing elbow...Avery is one of five different players the Hillcats have had this season who have undergone the famed Tommy John Surgery...RHP Scott Gaffney (currently on the Disabled List), LHP Travis Webb (currently in Double-A Carolina), RHP Jeff Jeffords and LHP Bill Bray are all Hillcats hurlers who had surgery to repair their torn ulnar collateral ligament...C Devin Mesoraco (currently in Double-A Carolina) also had the surgery back in high school in Pennsylvania...Tomorrow night RHP Edinson Volquez will get the start for the Cats in a rehab appearance...He will become the seventh Lynchburg player this season who has undergone the procedure...
CODDINGTON'S CANNON: C Kevin Coddington threw out a potential base thief last night in the top of the seventh inning...Thus far in his time with Lynchburg the catcher is 8-for-12 (67%) in caught stealing attempts...With Dayton before his promotion he was 14-for-34 (41%) in throwing out runners with the Dragons...Coddington has raised his percentage from last season with Dayton when he threw out 30 percent (30-for-101) of base thieves...
QUALITY NO COMFORT: RHP Mark Serrano worked six and 2/3 innings last night and allowed three runs to earn his sixth quality start of the season in 11 starts...He took the loss last night and in those six quality starts he is just 2-2 despite posting a 3.08 ERA in those outings...It was the 19th quality start of the season for the Hillcats starters who are posting a 3.35 ERA, but are just 15-19 on the season...
ALL-STAR: RHP Brad Boxberger was named to the 2010 Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star team yesterday as the Hillcats lone representative...The supplemental first round selection from last year's draft is 4-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 starts this season...Wednesday night he tossed a career-high seven innings and allowed just one run in earning his fourth victory of the season...It was his first in seven starts (May 3rd) and it snapped a personal four-game losing streak...The right-hander had only gotten through five innings one time in his previous six starts prior to last night...
JUG OF PUNCH: INF Alex Buchholz hit his fifth home run of the season Wednesday night in the top of the first inning to give the Hillcats an early 2-0 lead they would not let go of...That dinger gave him four homers in his last nine games after he hit one long ball in his first 47 contests...His slugging percentage over that time went from .377 to .428...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Adrian Alaniz was selected by Washington in the eighth round of the 2007 draft out of the University of Texas...He went a combined 27-10 for the Longhorns in three seasons, helped them to a College World Series Title his freshman season in 2005 and in 2007 he was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year...That same year he made his professional debut with Short Season Low-A Vermont and went 8-2 with a 2.39 ERA in 13 games (eight starts)...In 2008 he began the season with Potomac and had a 9-0 mark with a 2.62 ERA in 12 starts before getting promoted to Double-A Harrisburg...With the Senators he went 0-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 13 starts...Last season he returned to Harrisburg where he went 3-4 with a 4.76 ERA in 24 games (10 starts)...Last year he also made two starts with Vermont and had a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA...This season he has returned to the P-Nats and posted a 1-2 mark with a 3.67 ERA in 11 games (three starts)...Lynchburg has seen him twice this season, both times in relief and he has not allowed a run in six and 1/3 innings of work...In 2008 he made three starts against the Hillcats and was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA against them...
