Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, NC - Stephen Sauer pitched seven steady innings and the Dash used one big offensive frame to snap its four-game losing streak, beating the Wilmington Blue Rocks 4-3 on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem avenged its worst loss of the season the night before and tied the series at a game apiece.
The Dash (39-23) remains three games ahead of Salem in the Southern Division. The Red Sox rallied to beat Frederick 8-5 on Friday night. Winston's magic number dropped to six with eight games left in the first half. With any combination of six Dash wins or Red Sox losses, Winston would clinch a spot in the postseason.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when the Dash offense awoke from its recent doldrums against Wilmington starter John Lamb (2-2). The 19-year-old had allowed just four total runs in four Carolina League outings before allowing four in the second inning alone.
Seth Loman, Ozzie Lewis, and Jason Bour led off the frame with singles to load the bases. After Kyle Shelton struck out, Drew Garcia singled to left, scoring Loman and re-loading the bases. Two batters later, Brandon Short hit a ball off the left field fence for a triple. Three runs scored and the Dash took a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Rocks (29-33) scored a run off Stephen Sauer in the third. Adrian Ortiz led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Nick Francis hit a sinking line drive to left that glanced off Lewis' glove for a base hit. Francis attempted to move to second on the play, but Lewis's throw was on target and Garcia tagged him out. Eric Hosmer followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the Winston advantage to 4-1.
The game stayed that way until the eighth inning, as Sauer (5-2) kept getting easy ground ball outs. He came back out for the eighth and gave up a single to Adam Frost and an RBI triple to Patrick Norris.
Joe McEwing then went to his bullpen and brought in Santos Rodriguez. Ortiz greeted him with an RBI sacrifice fly to right, scoring Norris and cutting the Dash lead to one. After Rodriguez struck out Francis, Hosmer doubled to center and moved to third base on a passed ball. Rodriguez bore down and got Jamie Romak to strike out to end the inning. Romak's 18-game hitting streak also ended, as he went 0 for 4 on the night.
Gregory Infante worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his league-leading ninth save. He preserved the win for Sauer, who allowed nine hits and three runs over seven-plus innings.
Lamb was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Seven of Winston's nine starters picked up base hits, with Eduardo Escobar, Loman, and Lewis each collecting two.
The Dash goes for two in a row on Saturday night as RHP Nate Jones (4-2, 4.82) opposes Tim Melville (2-6, 5.86) in a 7 p.m. start. The audio webcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
