Last Time Out Five has been the magic number for the Potomac Nationals in the month of June: when they have scored more than five runs, they have won. Any less than five has meant a Potomac loss - until Thursday night in Lynchburg. The P-Nats pitching staff combined for their fifth shutout of the season, and Potomac opened their final road trip of the first half with a 3-0 victory. Potomac scored two in the top of the first inning off Hillcats starter Mark Serrano. Chris Curran led the game off with a double off the wall in right. Derek Norris walked with two outs, and Bill Rhinehart scored them both with a double to deep right. Derek Norris tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with a massive home run to left, his second of the season.

Bagel City The P-Nats threw their fifth shutout of the season Thursday night in Lynchburg. The staff has tossed the second most shutouts in the league, behind Kinston's seven. Overall, the Nats have been involved in eight games in which a team has been held scoreless (they have been kept off the scoreboard three times in 2010)

Philly Fanatic Justin Phillabaum had by far his best outing of the season Thursday night and was a huge part of the Nats' shutout of Lynchburg. Phillabaum came on in the sixth inning with a 3-0 lead and runners at second and third with one out. He got Alex Buchholz - the Cats' best clutch hitter - to ground out to third and struck out Kevin Coddington to end the threat. He then retired Lynchburg in order in the seventh and eighth innings to complete a perfect eight consecutive outs.

A Cup of Joe ... Joe Bisenius notched his first save of the year for Potomac on Thursday with a perfect ninth. Bisenius struck out two and induced a groundout to close the door. Joe has yet to allow a run in his three appearances; in four innings he has struck out five and given up just three hits.

Starry Nights... Michael Burgess was named to his second consecutive Carolina League All Star team Thursday. The rightfielder is second in the league with 44 RBI, and second on the Nats with five home runs (Tyler Moore leads the club with nine). He is also second on the circuit with 30 walks. Burgess has made 58 starts in right field in the Nats' 60 games and leads the club with five outfield assists.

Curran Affairs Chris Curran has made three consecutive starts, and has cashed in on the opportunity. Curran is 5-13 the last three nights with three runs scored and an RBI. In June, Chris has made five starts and impressed. He is 9-20 with four runs scored and four RBI. He has raised his batting average 102 points over that span.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It Tyler Moore is second in the Carolina League with 30 extra base hits. (Lynchburg's Alex Buchholz has 32) In addition to his team-leading nine home runs, Moore has banged 19 doubles (tied for third most in the circuit) and two triples. His .425 slugging percentage is 16th in the Carolina League, and his 96 total bases rank 12th.

And Boom(er) Goes The Dynamite Boomer Whiting has had eleven dynamic games in Syracuse since being promoted to AAA. Last night Whiting was 1-4. Whiting is now 14-41 (.341) with three runs, 8 RBI (in 20 G with POT he had 2 RBI total), six walks and seven stolen bases. In his third game last Wednesday, Boomer drove in four runs, hit his first triple in AAA, and stole two more bases. It was Boomer's first 4-RBI game since he did it twice in 2007 with Vermont. In his debut Monday, Boomer went 3-3, drove in a run, stole a base and scored.

Body By Jake Robbie Jacobsen hit his fourth home run of 2010 in the fifth inning Friday to tie the game at one; it was Jake's tenth career long ball and his third in five days. Monday, Jacobsen made a perfect Memorial Day tribute. Robbie's father is a general in the United States Air Force and in command of the Air Force Special Investigations Unit at Andrews Air Force Base.

Carolina In My Mind.. The P-Nats rank near the middle of the Carolina League in most statistical categories - with a few notable exceptions. Potomac leads the Carolina League in strikeouts (517), home runs yielded (48) and hit batters (41). Here is how the Nats shake out against the rest of the circuit in the major categories: Offense: Average 7th (.241), Walks 2nd (239), Runs 4th (271), Doubles 4th (118), Triples 3rd (19), HR 5th (39), Strikeouts 4th (464), OBP 5th (.322), SLG 4th (.374), SB 4th(47). Pitching: ERA 8th (4.36), Hits 7th (579), Shutouts 2nd (5), Walks 3rd (191).
