Carlos Mendez had three hits and an RBI, and starter James Avery threw a season-high six shutout innings and the Hillcats beat the Nationals 3-0.
The Cats got on the board in the second inning after catcher Jordan Wideman hit a run-scoring singe with two outs. Kevyn Feiner scored.
Wideman scored the next Hillcats run in the fifth. Lynchburg took a 2-0 advantage again with two outs after Carlos Mendez hit a single to drive in Wideman.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cats started the inning with three straight hits. Neftali Soto led off with a double. Jose Gualdron followed with a single, and Feiner drove in Soto with his own single.
James Avery had a solid outing. He set a season-high with six innings pitched and five strikeouts. Avery gets his second win after he only gave up three hits. The starter hasn't allowed an earned run at City Stadium yet this season (2-0).
