Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Leading by two runs in the eighth, Salem scored two in the inning to tie it up and then plated three in the ninth to take a three-run advantage. Frederick did not score in the bottom of the ninth as they fell, 8-5. With the loss the Keys fell to 37-25 on the season but with the Wilmington loss tonight, the magic number is just one for Frederick to clinch the Northern Division outright. Salem improved to 36-26 with the win.

Frederick fell behind quickly as they spotted the Red Sox two runs in the top of the first but the Keys would chip away at the deficit. The first three batters up for Frederick all reached based. RF Ronnie Welty came up with no down and the bases loaded. He grounded into a double play but CF Kyle Hudson scored from third as they Keys trailed 2-1 after the first.

After RHP Oliver Drake threw a scoreless top of the second, 3B Billy Rowell doubled to leadoff the bottom of the inning. DH Buck Britton moved him over on a ground out to second and then C Phillip Britton drove home Rowell on a sac fly to centerfield.

With the game tied up at two in the bottom of the third, the Keys took a commanding lead after just one swing of the bat. With two down and two on, 2B Miguel Abreu hit the Miguel Gonzalez pitch just over the leftfield fence for a three-run homer. Abreu's second homerun with the Keys this season gave Frederick a 5-2 lead after three innings.

Salem plated a run in the fourth on a solo shot by LF Jorge Padron but after allowing that run, Oliver Drake would not allow another for the rest of his outing.

On the night, Drake allowed three earned runs on eight hits over six innings of work. He struck out two and walked zero on the evening.

The Keys bullpen, however, could not close the door.

Entering Friday night, Frederick was 29-0 when leading after seven innings but Salem added a blemish to that mark.

The Red Sox plated two in the eighth on just one hit. Salem scored a run on a walk and the other a sacrifice fly.

After Frederick did not score in the bottom of the eighth, the Red Sox scored three runs in the ninth on five hits as they took a commanding 8-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The Keys went in order in the bottom of the ninth and fell 8-5 on the evening.

Frederick will try to clinch their first playoff berth since 2007 on Saturday night as they send LHP Rick Zagone (3-5, 3.36) to the hill for game three of the four-game set. Salem will counter with RHP Brock Huntzinger (5-3, 3.14)

First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Super Hero Night at Harry Grove Stadium. For tickets or more information about the Super Hero picnic contact the Keys Group Department at 301-815-9900.
