
LumberKings to receive pair of M's draft picks

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings in conjunction with the Seattle Mariners will open the second half of the season with five new players following the promotions of starting pitcher Nick Wells, infielder Louis Boyd, and catchers Nick Thurman, and Ryan Scott to the High-A Modesto Nuts as well as outfielder Jack Larsen being placed on the disabled list. Two of the Mariners 2018 draft picks, outfielder Keegan McGovern, ninth round selection, and infielder Zach Scott, 32nd round selection, will make their LumberKings debuts.
McGovern, 22, was taken 268th overall in the ninth round of this years draft out of the University of Georgia. During his senior season he earned first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America honors by Baseball America. A defensive standout, McGovern did not commit his first error in college until his junior year and ended a four-year collegiate career being charged with just three errors in over four hundred tries. He led the Bulldogs in home runs with 18, while batting .319 and driving in 50 RBI during his, senior, 2018 season.
Scott, 23, was selected 958th overall in the 32nd round of this year's draft out of Saint Leo University. During his senior year he batted .312 with eight home runs while batting in 42. Scott is the son of former New York Mets Bench Coach and former Big Leaguer Dick Scott.
The LumberKings will also be receiving starting pitching Randy Bell, 23, from the Modesto Nuts. Over 13 starts with the Nuts this year he went 3-4 with a 4.95 ERA and 49 strikeouts. The Mariners drafted Bell in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB draft out of South Alabama. The righty will make his LumberKings debut on Monday night against the Burlington Bees at Ashford University Field.
Clinton will open the new half with a pair of new catchers following the promotions of Scott and Thurman. Former Cedar Rapid Kernel Ranis Silva, 22, returns to the Midwest League after the spending all of his 2016 season with the Kernels. The Mariners acquired Silva in a trade with the Minnesota Twins on March 23rd of this year. He has played in five games this season split between Double-A Arkansas and the short-season Everett AquaSox.
The second catcher the LumberKings will receive is Mexican native Juan Camacho. He is in his fourth professional season, spending the majority of his first two seasons with the Arizona League Mariners. In 2017 Camacho, 22, spent all of his season with the AquaSox setting career highs in home runs, five, and runs driven in, 19.
The LumberKings will open the second half of the season at home on Thursday night with the fist game of a four-game series with the Kane County Cougars. Thursday nights are "Thirsty Thursdays" at Ashford University Field. All fans 21 years and older can enjoy $2 Coors Light and Miller Lite tall boys from 5-8 PM. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
