Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - For the third time in 2012 the Clinton LumberKings swept an opponent. Clinton dispatched the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Ashford University Field to complete the four-game sweep.
Bobby Shore turned in his fifth quality start and picked up his fourth win of the season. The right-hander allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits in six innings. Since becoming a starter on July 15th, Shore is 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA in eight starts.
Kyle Hunter notched his team-high fifth hold of the season and Matt Brazis shut down the Kernels for the final 1 1/3 innings for his second save.
Shortstop Patrick Brady got the scoring started for Clinton with an RBI single in the third inning, scoring Guillermo Pimentel who led off the frame with a walk. Jamal Austin followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to make it a 2-0 game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dillon Hazlett got a rally started with a perfect bunt up the third base line. Kernels pitcher Logan Odom threw wide of first, allowing Hazlett to go to second. The next batter, David Villasuso, lined an RBI double down the left field line to open a 3-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids didn't score until the seventh inning. Shore started the inning by walking Andy Workman and Frazier Hall. Clinton turned to Hunter who promptly retired Gary Mitchell on a fly out to left and then struck out Abel Baker. After walking Zach Wright to load the bases, Trevor Hairgrove lined a base hit up the middle to deliver two runs and cut the lead to 3-2.
Brazis relieved Hunter with two outs in the eighth inning and collected the final four outs of the night. Before Tuesday night, Clinton racked up 11 opportunities to be in line for a series sweep but only cashed in twice. With Burlington's win over Kane County, the magic number to get into the Midwest League Playoffs is at seven. The number stands at 10 to win the second-half title.
The LumberKings open a pivotal three-game series in Burlington on Wednesday night with a four game lead over the Bees. Clinton sends right-hander Mayckol Guaipe (3-0, 3.38) to the mound to face Burlington right-hander Drew Granier (11-7, 2.91). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
