DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 21, 2012) - Beloit shortstop Stephen Wickens had four hits, and three other Snappers had three hits apiece to back eight shutout innings by left-hander Jason Wheeler, who won his Midwest League-leading 14th game in an 11-0 road victory to split a four-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 1,614 at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday night.

The River Bandits (27-30 second half, 62-64 overall) were outhit, 18-6, and lost by 11 runs for the first time since a 13-2 home defeat against Clinton on May 7, 2010. Beloit led, 2-0, from the first until the sixth inning, when the visitors added four runs. Five runs in the eighth accounted for the final tally, which was the largest shutout loss for Quad Cities since a 15-0 home loss to Peoria August 16, 2009.

Quad Cities right-hander Brad Watson (3-3) allowed consecutive one-out singles in the first inning before committing a two-out balk that brought home the Snappers' first run. He then allowed an RBI single to Kennys Vargas for a 2-0 deficit after one half inning.

Watson scattered four hits from the second through fifth innings and kept the River Bandits within two runs. Meanwhile Wheeler (14-6) finished eight innings for the fourth time this season and allowed six hits and one walk. He struck out three batters and improved to 3-0 against the River Bandits this season.

Watson faltered again in the sixth inning, however, by walking the first two batters. After a sacrifice, left fielder A.J. Pettersen lined a two-run single to center field, and right fielder Nate Roberts brought him in with a double to left-center field. That ended the night for Watson, who allowed six earned runs on nine hits. He struck out four batters and walked three - matching the total number of walks in his first 26 1/3 innings with Quad Cities.

Right-hander Ricky Martinez came in to get the last two outs of the sixth inning around an RBI single by second baseman Eddie Rosario for a 6-0 Beloit lead.

In the eighth inning, Martinez allowed four straight singles to Roberts, center fielder J.D. Williams, Rosario and third baseman Miguel Sano that quickly made it 8-0. Right-hander Kyle Barraclough then entered the game, struck out the first batter he faced and hit the second. Then Wickens hit a two-run single to left field - his fourth hit - that gave Beloit a 10-run lead. Barraclough then issued a walk to catcher Matt Koch and gave up another RBI single by Pettersen to extend the deficit to 11-0 before two strikeouts by Roberts and Williams ended the 11-batter inning.

Roberts, Williams and Rosario each went 3-for-6 and scored two runs for Beloit (30-27, 69-58). Pettersen finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and Wickens and Rosario each had two RBIs to help the Snappers clinch their first season-series victory over the River Bandits since 2007, the last year prior to this season that Beloit clinched a playoff berth.

After splitting the first four games of the home stand with Beloit, Quad Cities begins a three-game series with the Kane County Cougars at 7 p.m. Wednesday night. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (9-6) will pitch against Cougars right-hander Tim Melville (0-0).
