Clinton, Iowa - Brett Shankin was on his "A" game Friday night and made sure the LumberKings split the doubleheader with the Kane County Cougars. Shankin threw a complete game, seven-hit shutout in the 2-0 win in the second game of the night between the two teams.

Clinton scored in the first inning on a two-out, two-strike base hit by Dan Paolini to score Jamal Austin. It stayed 1-0 until Ji-Man Choi ripped a triple to the gap in right center to score Dillon Hazlett with one out in the sixth inning.

Shankin got two double plays to help his cause as he faced only two threatening jams all night. He got Tim Ferguson to bounce out with the bases loaded in the fifth and Kane County put two on with one out in the seventh but Shankin retired Kenny Swab and Yowill Espinal to close out the win.

Game one was a different story as the LumberKings were 0-8 with runners in scoring position as they fell to Kane County, 5-2. Clinton was limited to just three hits as Robinson Yambati and Cody Fassold stifled the LumberKings offense. Jordan Shipers took his first loss of the season in game one. Fassold got the win in relief after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Clinton opens a three-game set with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night at Ashford University Field. Right-hander Richard Vargas (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the year for Clinton and Cedar Rapids sends Jairo Diaz (2-5, 7.59) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
