Captains Snap Five Game Skid in 8-7 Win

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (26-28) defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps (25-30) by a score of 8-7. Lake County had a four run bottom of the eighth inning to complete the comeback and get the win. In the eighth Jordan Casas came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Casas lifted a fly ball to left field, and the left fielder Jason Krizan fell down and lost his glove. He still tried to catch the baseball and the ball hit off his knee and skipped away. All of the base runners scored and Casas slid into third with a triple. Leonardo Castillo followed with a base hit that scored Casas and the Captains led 8-4 after eight innings of play.

West Michigan put up three runs in the third inning. With two outs, Eugino Suarez hit his first of thre doubles and then Steven Moya singled him home and it was 1-0 Whitecaps. Dean Green followed with homerun to dead center field. The homer was green's ninth of the season and the score was 3-0 West Michigan after three innings.

The Captains cut into the three run lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Robel Garcia un-loaded his third homerun of the season to deep right field and the score stood at 3-1 through six innings. Garcia's homer came from the left side of the plate. Garcia has two of his three homers from the left side of the plate this season.

In the seventh inning, West Michigan got the run back. Brandon Loy walked with one out and so did the following hitter Jason Krizan. With two on and one out Suarez smacked his third double of the night to left field. The two-bagger scored Loy and the Whitecaps led the game 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh Lake County tied the ballgame. Jerrud Sabourin walked and Alex Monsalve reached on an error. Jordan Casas doubled to center field and Sabourin score. The score was 4-2 and there were two runners in scoring position with only one out. With two outs, Robel Garcia singled to right field and both Monsalve and Casas scored to tie the game at 4-4 through seven innings.

In the ninth, Brandon Loy hit a two run homer to right center field and Steven Moya singled home a run to close the Captains lead to 8-7. The Captains held off the Whitecaps for the rest of the ninth inning to snap a five game losing skid. Jordan Casas finished with four RBI's and Leonardo Castillo added three RBI's himself.

RHP Brennan Smith (1-3) got the nod for West Michigan and pitched five plus innings. He allowed four hits, one earned run he struck out six and allowed the homerun to Robel Garcia. Melvin Mercedes pitched 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit, but gave up two runs, one earned and walked two. Michael Torrelba (3-2) was given the loss. Torrelba pitched 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2K and the triple to Jordan Casas.

LHP Shawn Morimando (1-1) took the ball for the Captains and didn't factor in the decision. Morimando pitched five hits, three runs, all earned two walks and two strikeouts and surrendered the homer to Dean Green. Manny Carmona pitched two innings and gave up two hits one run and it was earned two walks and three strikeouts. Francisco Valera (2-3) earned the win for Lake County. Valera pitched one inning allowing two hits, two earned runs and struck out two. Valera also surrendered the homerun in the ninth to Brandon Loy. Jeff Johnson entered the ballgame and earned his tenth save of the season. Johnson pitched one inning and allowed two hits one earned run and struck out one.

Saturday is a Fireworks Saturday Night presented by Monreal Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks extravaganza. Saturday is also Ladies Night presented by Malibu Rum, featuring Malibu Rum drink specials for the ladies. Game time is 7 PM.

Saturday is also the Captains' annual "Salute to Cleveland Sports History Night". The inaugural event was named ESPN the Magazine's "Minor League Promotion of the Year" in 2009. The night will include Cleveland Sports history-themed on-field promotions and appearances and autograph sessions by Cleveland sports legends who are scheduled to appear, including current Browns Wide Receiver Greg Little and rookie LB James-Michael Johnson, former Browns Coach Sam Rutigliano and former Browns kicker Don Cockroft; former Cavalier Play-by-Play Legend Joe Tait and former player Elmore Smith; former Lumberjacks Hockey player Jock Callander; and former Indians IF Vern Fuller.

Former Heisman Trophy-winning Ohio State and current Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Troy Smith will also be present to meet fans. Smith will be bringing the 2006 Heisman Trohpy that he won after his Senior season with the Buckeyes after garnering a record 86.7% of the total vote and fans will be invited to take photos with the iconic trophy.

In addition, displays from League Park and the Baseball Heritage Museum will be placed on the concourse and the Captains will be wearing 1970's themed Cleveland Indians jerseys that night and fans can bid on the jerseys as part of a post-game jersey auction with proceeds benefiting Captains Charities. The Browns Backers will kick-off the festivities with a tail gate party in the Classic Park parking lot beginning at 2PM. The Captains will be playing the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday Night. Lake County will send Felix Sterling (2-4, 5.90) and Fort Wayne will counter RHP Matt Wisler (1-3, 2.96) Game time is at 7:00 PM
