Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Following a familiar storyline early in 2015, the Beloit Snappers (3-8) scored a run in the top of the first inning in Clinton. For the fifth time in five games that the LumberKings (5-6) have hosted Beloit, the visitors have scored in the opening frame. But Sunday afternoon, and for the third time in those five games, the home team came away with the win, as Clinton used two big innings in route to a 9-4 win.

Clinton starter Jeffeson Medina (ND) improved off of his rocky season debut. The Venezuelan righty allowed only one run over 4.1 innings, but came two outs from qualifying for the win, as three Clinton bullpen arms allowed only three hits over the final 4.2 innings.

Down 1-0 after half an inning, the LumberKings jumped on Beloit starter Daniel Gossett (L, 0-2) early and often. For the second time this season, Chantz Mack began the bottom of the first inning vs. Beloit with a triple. Mack then scored on the first of two doubles hit by Gianfranco Wawoe on the afternoon, and Wawoe came home on a two-RBI base hit by Chris Mariscal, as Clinton led 3-1 after one inning.

The LumberKings added to the lead with two runs in the third inning, as Kristian Brito drove home two of his season high three runs with a single. Joe DeCarlo increased the Clinton lead to five with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Clinton bullpen, which came into Sunday's game with a 2.05 ERA and had allowed only eight earned runs through the teams' first 10 games, surrendered three earned runs in the win. Ryan Horstman (W, 2-0) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, and has yet to allow an earned run this season. Rohn Pierce, who threw two innings, allowed an earned run in the eighth, and Peter Miller, who had not allowed an earned run over his first two appearances, gave up two runs in a late rally by Beloit in the ninth.

Sunday featured the first multi-run victory of the season for the LumberKings, as they are 4-1 in games decided by one run, and just 1-5 in games decided by multiple runs. Wawoe's first inning double extended his hit streak to a season high five games, while he recorded his first three hit game of the season.
