BURLINGTON, IOWA - Nick Gordon had three hits and drove in three runs as the Kernels topped Burlington 5-2 on Monday at Community Field. The shortstop went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in runs with a single and two sacrifice flies. Tanner English also had a big day at the plate as he recorded three hits and scored two runs.
The win allowed the Kernels (8-4) to avoid the sweep and salvage one of the three games in the series. The team now travels to Wisconsin for a three-game series against the Timber Rattlers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Jared Wilson (2-0) recorded the win on the hill for the Kernels, going five innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out three and walking four.
The Kernels scored the first run of the game in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Brian Navarreto began the inning with a walk and later scored on Nick Gordon's RBI sacrifice fly to center.
Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. Again, the inning began with a walk as Max Murphy drew the free pass to reach first base. After a groundout to move him into scoring position, Murphy scored when T.J. White reached on a fielding error by Bees shortstop Jake Yacinich.
Gordon drove in his second run of the day in the fifth inning as the Kernels scored in their third consecutive inning to move in front 3-0. Gordon's RBI single up the middle brought home Tanner English, who singled to begin the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Granite.
Burlington (7-5) got on the board in the fifth inning with a RBI single to left by Andrew Daniel, making the score 3-1. The hit scored Jake Yacinich, who singled and stole second base to get into scoring position.
The Kernels scored twice in the seventh inning to move ahead 5-1. English began the inning with a single, his third hit of the day. He quickly stole second base and scored on Zack Granite's RBI triple to right-center. Granite scored on Gordon's third run batted in on the afternoon, a RBI sacrifice fly to right.
Burlington scored a run in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate. With the bases loaded after two singles and a walk, Yacinich scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Zach Houchins, cutting the Kernels lead to 5-2. However, a line out then ended the game, leaving two on base.
Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Cedar Rapids, notching his second hold. He allowed one hit while striking out two and walking two. C.K. Irby went the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one and walking one.
