Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - First baseman Rowdy Tellez walloped a two-run homer to power a balanced attack and the Lansing Lugnuts (9-3) enjoyed their best offensive performance of the year, routing the Dayton Dragons (6-6) in an early Monday rubber match, 11-3.
Playing in gray, windy, at times rainy conditions that led to seven errors between the two teams, the Eastern Division-leading Lugnuts set season highs in runs, hits (15), doubles (4) and hit batsmen (4). It was the Lugs' fourth consecutive series win to open 2015.
The Lugs scored single tallies in the first, second and third innings before Tellez gave the home team a cushion with his second home run of the year, victimizing Dayton starter Tyler Mahle (Loss, 1-1) in the fourth inning.
Lansing put the game away with four runs in the sixth against reliever Alejandro Chacin, tacking on a pair of unearned runs against Brennan Bernardino in the eighth for good measure.
The recipient of the run support was starter Chase De Jong (Win, 1-0), who struck out four Dragons while allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings. Reliever Mark Biggs held Dayton off the scoreboard from the sixth through the eighth innings, before Chase Wellbrock gave up an unearned run in the ninth.
The top four batters in the Lansing order - Tim Locastro, Dickie Joe Thon, Tellez and Ryan McBroom - each scored two runs, with leadoff hitter Locastro reaching base four times on three HBPs and a double. Tellez, McBroom, Danny Jansen, Justin Atkinson and Chris Carlson all enjoyed multi-hit games. Carlson, the 8th-slot hitter, went 2-for-2 with a single, double and two walks.
The lone negative for Lansing: center fielder Josh Almonte left the game due to injury in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lugnuts next welcome the Fort Wayne TinCaps to Cooley Law School Stadium, starting left-hander Shane Dawson (0-1, 2.70) against TinCaps lefty Taylor Cox (0-0, 6.75).
First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night, a Dollar Deal Day at the ballpark: $1 hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and fountain drinks.
