LumberKings Drop Pair Contests with Quad Cities

CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings dropped a pair of games with the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday night at NelsonCorp Field. Clinton (6-5, 39-41) saw a six-game game winning streak snapped in the first game with a 2-0 loss and then were beaten in the second meeting by the River Bandits (7-3, 50-26) 7-3.

GAME ONE

The Clinton LumberKings saw their season long six-game winning streak come to an end in game one. Pitching was much of the story for the first seven innings before rains forced the game to be suspended in the bottom of the seventh in a 0-0 tie.

Tanner Andrews started for Clinton and turned in the longest start of his professional career with seven shutout innings. He allowed just one hit over his time out and walked one while striking out two and was given a no decision.

The game resumed on Monday night and Quad Cities immediatly broke the scoreless tie with a two-run rally in the top of the eighth. Raul Brito came on to take over in the inning and hit the first batter he faced - Alex McKenna. Three batters later Michael Wielanski singled through the left side of the infield, with the runners going, to score the game's first run. Freudis capped the scoring with an RBI single for the third hit of the inning.

Brito (2-1) was given the loss for his time. He allowed two runs on thee hits while walking one and striking out one.

Joey Gonzalez earned the win for the River Bandits for working the final 2.1 innings. He allowed no runs on no hits while walking one and striking out none. Gonzalez (3-1) was one of three Quad Cities pitchers used in the game.

GAME TWO

The LumberKings were buried beneath 15-hits by Quad Cities in the regularly scheduled Monday night game and fell in convincing fashion 7-3. River Bandit shortstop Fredis Nova led the way with three doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Quad Cities started the scoring immediately with two runs against LumberKings starter Alberto Guerrero. Nova chased home the game's first run with his first double of the night and then scored when he stole third and came home on Will Banfield's throw to third that went into left field.

In the top of the third inning, the River Bandits added another run to stretch their lead to 3-0. Nova scored the run after reaching with his second double of the night and crossed the plate on an Oscar Campos RBI single.

The LumberKings scored their first run of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Three walks by Quad Cities starter Matt Ruppenthal opened the inning and Bubba Hollins singled into left to bring home Clinton's first run.

The hit was the first of the night allowed by Ruppenthal (3-2) who ended his night with the win. He allowed one run on one hit while walking four and striking out six.

Guerrero (3-3) was hung with the loss. He allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits while walking two and striking out six.

Quad Cities pulled away with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning before adding their final run of the night in the ninth.

Thomas Jones homered for the sixth time of the season in top of the seventh and the LumberKings plated their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a Connor Scott RBI groundout.

The LumberKings will now hit the road for a brief two-game series with the Beloit Snappers that will open on Tuesday night. Clinton will throw righty George Soriano (1-5, 4.86) while Quad Cities will tap righty Chase Cohen (4-7, 6.29).
