July 1, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

The Hot Rods have won their last six games and look for their second-straight sweep after a 3-0 shutout win on Sunday afternoon.

About Last Night... After being held without a hit through the first three innings and stranding runners at the corners in the fourth, the Hot Rods broke through against Lansing starter Sean Wymer in the fifth. With one out, Izzy Wilson singled to right and went to third when Osmy Gregorio did the same. Nate Soria executed a safety squeeze, with Wilson crossing the plate just ahead of the tag to make it a 1-0 game as Gregorio moved into second and Soria ended up at first. Ford Proctor doubled to left-center field in the next at-bat, driving in Gregorio to make it a 2-0 ballgame. The Hot Rods plated another run in the in the sixth to chase Wymer from the game. Jonathan Aranda stroked a one-out single to left and went to second on an error by the short stop that allowed Jordan Qsar to reach at first. Gregorio singled to center, plating Aranda to make it a 3-0 Hot Rods lead.

June Bloom... The Hot Rods started off the month of June slow, but finished with a record of 15-10. Bowling Green was led in average by Kaleo Johnson, who was batting .340 through 14 games prior to his promotion. Wander Franco and Michael Smith had the next highest averages at .298. Grant Witherspoon led the team in home runs with three, while no one else had more than one during the month. The Hot Rods finished with 13 total homers in June, the lowest total for any month out of the three played thus far. The pitching staff was great, posting a 2.67 ERA with 193 strikeouts over 212 innings of work while issuing just 48 walks.

Sanchez's Stretch... Cristopher Sanchez was lights-out in June for the Hot Rods, and has a current streak of three outings without letting up a run. That span stretches over 10-innings, but his month of June was been unreal. The lefty made six appearances last month, including two starts, and held his opponents to one run in 24 innings on the mound. He was 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA while striking out 23 and issuing just five walks over that stretch. Sanchez, Nick Padilla, and Matthew Liberatore all finished June with ERAs south of 1.00.

Whalen's Hitting Streak... Seaver Whalen has been on a hot streak for Bowling Green lately, hitting safely in each of his last seven games. The utility man had a walk-off hit and sacrifice fly during a four-game sweep against Great Lakes, but over this seven-game stretch is batting .393 with a homer and seven RBIs. Whalen's streak dates back to June 23, and is tied with Chris Betts' seven-game streak as the team's 7th longest this season.

New Kids on the Block... Izzy Wilson and Jonathan Aranda were both added late in the month of June ot the BG roster, but have made immediate impacts. Aranda has reached base safely in four-straight games, while Wilson has a four-game hitting streak and hit a game-tying home run in the Lansing series.

Yesterday's Notes... Whalen extended his hitting streak to seven games... Ogando earned his third save of the season... Gregorio had his tenth multi-hit effort of the season... Bowling Green secured their sixth shutout of the year... They're 6-7 in shutouts this season... The last BG shutout was on June 20th in South Bend against the Cubs... It's their fourth shutout in the month of June... The Hot Rods are one-win away from tying their season-high win streak of seven games... Bowling Green secured their 14th series win of the season on Sunday... The team is 15-5 in day games... The Hot Rods close out the month of June with a 15-10 record... Soria's RBI in the fifth inning on the safety squeeze was the first of his professional career...
