Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Home runs have been hard to come by for Beloit in 2019, but you wouldn't have guessed that on Monday night. The Snappers slugged a trio of bombs- all solo shots- in their 3-2 rout of the Timber Rattlers to close out the three-game series. The win snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak that has defined Beloit's second half thus far.
Snappers starter Reid Birlingmair (2-5, 5.64 ERA) entered play on Monday in desperate need of a bounce-back performance. After posting a 2.37 ERA through his first seven appearances of the season, Birlingmair was blitzed for an 11.12 ERA over his next five starts; he was the losing pitcher in all five of those games.
Birlingmair's rough stretch looked bound to continue on Monday when he walked the first two batters of the game on nine pitches. He rallied to induce a David Fry double play and then nearly escaped the inning unscathed, but Yeison Coca managed to leg out an RBI infield single despite a phenomenal effort by second baseman Joseph Pena.
The Snappers righty would settle in nicely. Birlingmair finished with six innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs while walking three and striking out three.
Beloit's offense, on the other hand, was quiet to start the night. Rattlers starter Matt Lazar (2-1, 1.42 ERA) dominated the Snappers over his 3 2/3 shutout frames, but was pulled due to a strict pitch count. Beloit took advantage and ambushed reliever Peter Strzelecki with back-to-back solo homers in the fifth: Devin Foyle hit his third dinger of the year, and then Pena managed to sneak the first long ball of his career just inside the right field foul pole.
Wisconsin answered immediately in the top of the sixth on a solo shot from Brewers No. 2 prospect Brice Turang. That set the stage for Nick Ward to play hero in the eighth inning, when his second home run with Beloit put the Snappers ahead 3-2. That was enough to make a winner out of Brandon Withers, who threw two innings of shutout relief before Ty Damron earned his first save of 2019.
Beloit had two multi-hit performances on Monday. Ward went 2-for-4 while Foyle notched a double to go along with his home run. The Timber Rattlers were held to just five hits, two of which came from Turang.
The Snappers look to take their momentum into a brief two-game set at Pohlman Field with the LumberKings. Beloit Opening Day starter Chase Cohen (4-7, 6.29 ERA) goes for Beloit against Clinton's George Soriano (1-5, 4.86 ERA).
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and have been the Single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. For more ticket information, contact the Snappers office at (608) 362- 2272 or visit our website, www.snappersbaseball.com.
