July 1, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- The Kane County Cougars (43-37, 8-3) allowed three eighth inning runs in a 4-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (44-37, 5-6) on Monday afternoon at Perfect Game Field. Gabe Snyder hit a fly ball near the right field foul pole in the eighth inning. It was ruled fair for a two-run homer, resulting in the ejection of Cougar manager Vince Harrison.

Pitching commanded the early innings. Both Cougar starter Kenny Hernandez and Cedar Rapids starter Kai-Wei Teng lasted six innings. Both gave up one run and did not factor into the decision.

The run Hernandez yielded was an RBI single to Daniel Ozoria in the bottom of the second inning to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars evened the score off Teng in the third when Zac Almond took the right-hander deep for a solo home run to left field.

Hernandez finished the day allowing five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Teng scattered four hits, struck out two and walked two. Ryan Miller came out of the Cougar bullpen and threw a scoreless seventh. However, he allowed the go-ahead double to Chris Williams in the bottom of the eighth. Two batters later, he served up the game-breaking homer to Gabe Snyder. Miller (3-5) ultimately took the loss.

Carlos Suniaga (2-2) relieved Teng and tossed two shutout innings to earn the win. Moises Gomez (4) walked a man in the ninth but hung on to earn the save.

The Cougars head to Peoria to begin a mini two-game series with the Chiefs, starting Tuesday night at 6:35. The Cougars have not announced their starting pitcher yet. Peoria will throw RHP Mike Brettell (2-5, 5.00). Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
