Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - This time it was the LumberKings with the hitting barrage as they pounded out 12 hits in a 5-3 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks in front of 5,187 fans on Saturday night at Ashford University Field.

South Bend jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Clinton starter Jordan Pries after three innings but the LumberKings answered back in the middle innings. The LumberKings got four consecutive hits with two outs in the fifth inning and took a 3-2 lead after five innings. Ji-Man Choi and Ramon Morla hit back-to-back doubles to produce the first run and Dan Paolini and Jabari Blash had consecutive base hits to take the lead.

Clinton came up with more two-out magic in the sixth when Kevin Rivers got things going with a single. A bobble by Hawks centerfielder Chris Ellison allowed Rivers to take second base. Jamal Austin walked to put runners on first and second with two away. Ji-Man Choi hit a towering blast over Ellison's head in centerfield for a two-run double and a 5-2 lead.

South Bend made things interesting in the eighth inning. LumberKings reliever John Taylor walked Ellison to start the frame and gave up a single to Niko Gallego. Taylor came back to strikeout Tom Belza but then gave up a run-scoring single to Matt Helm to trim the lead to 5-3.

LumberKings manager Eddie Menchaca went to his closer Stephen Shackleford for a five-out save. After walking Marc Bougeois to load the bases, Shackleford got Kerry Jenkins to pop out in shallow left field and induced a groundout by Hawks catcher Roidney Aguila.

Shackleford struck out Hawks third baseman Eric Groff to start the ninth but walked Raul Navarro. Ellison represented the tying run but grounded into a 4-6-3, game-ending double play.

The two teams play game two of the series on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings send right-hander Robert Shore (1-2, 3.38) for a spot-start and South Bend sends right-hander Alex Capaul (1-1, 5.94) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
