Dayton Dragons News Release
Clinton, IA â The Dayton Dragons and Clinton Lumber Kings wrapped up the four game series that marked the end of the first road trip of the 2004 season for the Dragons. The Lumber Kings picked up a 10-2 win in the finale of the series to even up the set at two games a piece in front of 543 fans at Alliant Energy Field.
Clinton jumped on Dragons starter Derek Hawk (L, 0-1) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning for a pair of runs. Kevin Richardson led the inning off with a double and came home on a two-base hit off the bat of Josh Kruezer. Kruezer was plated later in the inning on the RBI double by Ian Kinsler giving the Lumber Kings had the 2-0 lead.
Hawk departed after 3.0 innings of six hit, four strikeout, two walk baseball. The righty allowed two runs, both of which were earned. Hawk gave way to Brock Till as the Lumber Kings came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Till walked the first batter he faced in Brock Jacobson, who stole second base and moved to third on a fly out to left field. With the infield drawn in, Jacobson scored on a error by third baseman Troy Cairns and Clinton had a 3-0 lead.
Dayton was held without a hit until Ben Himes led off the fourth with a single and was held without a run until a two run fifth inning rally to get back into the game. Chris Dickerson picked a one out triple and scored on a Luis Bolivar RBI groundout to make the score 3-1 Clinton. After a Joey Votto single with two down, Kyle Smith doubled off the wall in deep right center scoring Votto and pulling the Dragons within a single run at 3-2.
Craig Frydendall (W, 1-1) was less then effective in his 2.0 innings of work on Monday night, surrendering two runs, both earned, and four hits to Dayton. The southpaw struck out two and picked up his first win of the 2004 season.
Clinton broke the game open in the eighth as the Dragons struggled to throw strikes. Brock Till, who came on for Hawk to begin the fourth inning, allowed a single and two walks to the first three batters and was taken out in favor of Don Gemmell. Gemmell did not fare much better, allowing a bases loaded walk to Brock Jacobson, a two RBI single to Emerson Frostad, a walk to Casey Benjamin and a two RBI double to Ian Kinsler. When it was all said and done the Lumber Kings score seven runs on three hits, two Dragons errors and four walks. Till was charged with three runs, all earned, in the inning and Gemmell with four runs, three earned in the eighth.
Edison Volquez (S, 1) pitched the final three innings of the game to pick up his first save of the season.
The Dragons open an eight game home stand beginning on Tuesday night with a four game series against the Swing of the Quad Cities. Tuesday's first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM.
