
Kane County drops Kernels into 1st-place tie

GENEVA, Ill. - Chris Tritle had a pair of doubles and drove in a run to lead Kane County past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 6-3, Monday afternoon before a paid crowd of 6,646 at Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium.
The loss dropped the Kernels (7-4) into a first-place tie with Kane County (7-4) in the Midwest League's Western Division. The loss was the Kernels' second straight to the Cougars and evened the four-game series at two games apiece.
Kane County scored two runs each in the first, third and fifth innings. Tritle, a former Center Point-Urbana prep, doubled home a run in the fifth.
Quan Cosby had two hits for the Kernels, who matched their season low with five hits. Matt Pali's home run in the Kernels' fourth cut Kane County's lead to 4-1. Sean Rodriguez singled home two runs in the fifth to pull the Kernels within 4-3.
Kernels starter Rafael Rodriguez (0-2) was roughed up for five hits and four runs in four innings and took the loss. Bob Zimmermann pitched two scoreless innings of relief and struck out three.
Three Kane County pitchers combined to strike out 12 Kernels batters.
The Kernels open a four-game series at Clinton on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m. All Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600-AM, with John Rodgers.
