COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — Battle Creek got great pitching from starter Chase Wright and the bullpen was near perfect as the Yankees defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-2 on Monday night at Old Kent Park.

Wright (1-1) pitched seven strong innings giving up only four hits and two runs — only one of them earned — while striking out eight to get his first victory of the season. Heath Castle struck out two of the three batters he faced and Paul Thorp pitched the final 1.1 innings — striking out all four batters he faced — to earn his third save of the season.

Battle Creek got on the board first courtesy of a Willie Vasquez RBI single in the top half of the second. West Michigan tied things up in the bottom half of the inning scoring an unearned run.

Battle Creek regained the lead in the fifth when Vasquez scored on Melky Cabrera's RBI single. The Yankees tacked on another run in the seventh when Bryce Kartler scored on Cabrera's sacrifice fly making it a 3-1 game.

West Michigan plated one run in the bottom of the seventh, but stranded the potential tying run at third.

The Yankees will travel to Fort Wayne on Tuesday night to start a four-game series with the Wizards, first-pitch is scheduled for 7.
