Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Peoria Chiefs made their first roster move of the 2004 season on Sunday when the St. Louis Cardinals promoted reliever Rich Scalamandre to Palm Beach and added SS Brendan Ryan to the Peoria roster. The move takes effect immediately with Ryan expected to be in the Chiefs starting lineup on Sunday.
Scalamandre had been automatic through the first nine games for the Chiefs in 2004. In five appearances the right-hander had pitched eight and 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. In addition he struck out 11 without issuing a walk. In his last appearance on Saturday, Scalamandre pitched two and 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.
Ryan was expected to be on the Chiefs original opening day roster but he suffered a wrist injury late in spring training and stayed in Jupiter, FL until he healed. The Los Angeles, CA native was a 7th round draft pick in 2003 out of Lewis & Clark State College. Ryan spent the 2003 season with the New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League. In 53 games, he hit .311 with 14 doubles, four triples and 25 RBI. Ryan also stole 11 bases and scored 20 runs.
The Chiefs 2004 home opener is Tuesday April 20th at 6:00PM against the kane County Cougars. All fans receive a 2004 Chiefs calendar and all Kids' Club members get in free with a paid adult. In addition, the Chiefs are guaranteed to win and if they don't all fans in attendance can turn their ticket in for one free ticket to any 2004 regular season home game.
