Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA – The Burlington Bees completed a four-game sweep of the Swing of the Quad Cities with a 5-2 victory at Community Field tonight. At four in a row, the Bees have their longest winning streak of the young season and have now won eight straight against the Quad Cities going back to last season.

The Bees got on the board early and never trailed in this one. Chris Lubanski led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on a groundout by Angel Sanchez. Mitch Maier started the rally over with a single and stole second base. After walks to Bryan Graham and Adam Donachie, a wild pitch from Swing starter Chris Schutt (0-1) brought in Maier with the second run. Another walk to Adam Keim reloaded the bases setting up a sacrifice fly from Mike Gaffney to drive in the third run.

Bees' starter Greg Atencio (1-1) was solid again on the mound. He held the Swing to one hit through four innings, but gave up two runs in the fifth. Brock Peterson led off with a single and scored two batters later on a triple by Scott Whitrock as Graham tripped chasing the ball into the left field corner. Whitrock scored an unearned run as he got caught in a rundown between third and home after a comebacker to the mound, but knocked the ball out of Donachie's glove as he crossed home plate. Atencio got out of the inning by striking out Dusty Gomon and getting Paul Rutgers to groundout to strand the tying run at third. In the sixth inning, the Swing had JR Taylor at third with two outs and Peterson hit a ball in the hole between short and third that had hit written all over it, but Sanchez made a sliding stop on the outfield grass and had his throw to first scooped up by Kila Kaaihue at first to complete a great play and end the inning.

The Bees added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Lubanski hit a chopper to second. The Swing got a force at second base, but the relay throw to first went to the fence allowing a second run to score and make it 5-2.

Atencio matched a season-high with 8 strikeouts and matched a career-high with 8 innings pitched and turned it over to Alexis Encarnacion for the ninth. Encarnacion walked two and allowed one hit, but stranded the bases loaded to preserve the victory for his first save of the season.

The Bees take to the road for the first time this season and start a four-game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium tomorrow night at 6:35. RH Carlos Rosa (0-2, 2.70) will pitch for the Bees against RH Brandon Moorhead (1-0, 0.00). The game will be broadcast ONLY on KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:35.
