Great Lakes Loons News Release
LANSING, MI - Yohermyn Chavez broke a four-all tie with a double down the right field line in the seventh inning to help lead the Lansing Lugnuts to a 7-4 victory Saturday night over the Great Lakes Loons at Oldsmobile Park and earn a split in the teams' four-game series.
Chavez's double came after Manny Rodriguez tied the game with a single. Both hits came off reliever Thomas Melgarejo (1-2), who suffered the loss.
The Lugnuts struck first in the ballgame in the second on a single by Darin Mastroianni. Lansing scored two more times in the fourth. Raul Barron singled home Manny Rodriguez with a single to right, then Justin Jackson singled up the middle to plate Barron to put the Lugnuts up 3-0.
But the Loons took the lead with four runs in the sixth inning in an inning in which the Lugnuts committed three errors. Erik Kanaby and Justin Fuller each had RBIs to pull the Loons to within one. Then with Kanaby at third and Andrew Lambo at second, Alfredo Silverio singled in two runs. The four runs snapped a 17 1/3 scoreless innings streak for the Loons' offense.
But Lansing took the lead with their two runs in the seventh and added two insurance runs in the eighth on Justin Jackson's third home run of the year.
Kyle Smit started and allowed three runs (all earned) in five innings.
Brad Mills (3-2) was the winning pitcher. He did not allow an earned run in seven innings. Cody Crowell earned his sixth save of the year.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Sunday for the start of an eight-day, nine-game homestand and a four-game series against Fort Wayne. Game time Sunday is 3:05pm. It's a Family Fun in the SUNday with a pre-game Youth Baseball Clinic beginning at noon and a post-game Kids Run the Bases. Both events are presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
