
Cougars top Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars rode a pair of three-run innings to a 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The Rattlers outhit Kane County -6, but would the Cougars wound up with their third win in the four game series.
Wisconsin (22-29) got on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally. Maximo Mendez extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single. Juan Diaz followed with a double to center and Mendez raced home with the run for a 1-0 lead.
Kane County (33-21) rallied for three runs and knocked Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez out of the game in the bottom of the third. A single, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs. Ramirez got the first out on a shallow fly ball to left. An infield grounder by Michael Richard knocked in the first run. A double to right by Shane Keough drove in the next two runs for a 3-1 lead.
Mendez pulled Wisconsin to within a run on a two-out RBI triple in the top of the fifth. But, the Cougars pulled away in an awkward bottom of the fifth.
Kane County score three runs on one hit in the fifth. Justin Frash drove in one run with an RBI single off Ryan Moorer. Rattler reliever Keith Meyer threw a pair of run scoring wild pitches later in the frame and the Cougars lead moved out to 6-2.
Wisconsin crept back to within two runs with another two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Israel Nunez started the rally with a two-out double. Mendez picked up his third hit of the night, a double into the right field corner, to drive in Nunez. Diaz singled to left for his third hit of the night to plate Mendez and make the score 6-4.
Richmond pitched seven innings, scattered nine hits, and struck out five while allowing four runs for his fifth win of the season.
Chad Kerfoot and Nick Walters finshed off the Rattlers out of the Kane County bullpen.
Wisconsin ended their 12-game, 13-day road trip with a record of 3-9.
The Timber Rattlers begin an eight-game homestand with a Sunday evening with a game against the Peoria Chiefs and their manager, Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg. Edward Paredes (4-4, 4.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria counters with Hung-Wen Chen (0-3,3.30). It is a special 5:05pm start time for Sunday's game.
