Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts were outhit Monday night by the Peoria Chiefs, but for the first this season, the Lugnuts were able to overcome the hit deficit to take a 6-3 win in front of 2,322 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
With two men out in the first, Lansing's Darin Mastroianni stepped to the plate and drilled a solo homer past the left field wall to put the Lugnuts up 1-0.
Peoria knotted the game up in the third inning when Kyler Burke's double off of the right field wall scored Nathan Samson from second base. Marquez Smith tried to score from first on the play, but was thrown out at home on a relay toss by Lansing first baseman Mike McDade.
The Lugnuts regained the lead in the fourth frame when Manny Rodriguez doubled and scored on a Matt Liuzza two-out double to center field, making it a 2-1 game.
Lansing added another run with two away in the fifth when Moises Sierra's triple to right-center field was followed by a Justin Jackson single into center field that pushed the advantage to 3-1.
The Lugnuts would begin to pull away in the sixth inning with another two-out rally to make it a 5-1 cushion. After Peoria reliever Jordan Latham retired the first two batters of the frame, Liuzza drew a walk and John Tolisano reached on an error to bring up McDade. McDade then lined a single off of the left-center field wall, plating both runners before he was thrown out at second while trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Lansing capped its scoring run in the seventh inning when Sierra smashed a long dinger to left field that made it 6-1. It was his second homer of the year and was the only run that the Lugnuts scored with less than two out in the game.
Kyle Ginley (3-0) helped the offense out by throwing five innings of solid baseball for Lansing en route to his third victory of the year. He allowed just one unearned run and scattered five hits in the outing.
Alberto Cabrera (1-2) took the loss for the Chiefs after surrendering three runs on six hits in five frames.
The win also gives Lansing (10-7) consecutive triumphs for the first time since April 9th. The Lugnuts and Peoria (7-11) will play the second game of the series on Tuesday night at Oldsmobile Park beginning at 6:05 p.m. Nate Starner (0-2, 2.40) will take the mound for the home club. Dae-Eun Rhee (3-0, 0.56) will get the call for the Chiefs.
