Hawks hang a loss on Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN -- Ramon Ramirez broke a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning and the South Bend Silver Hawks held on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. The win was the first at Coveleski Regional Stadium for the Silver Hawks in 2008. Taylor Harbin homered and knocked in a pair of runs for the Hawks.

South Bend (3-14) grabbed a 1-0 lead two batters into the bottom of the first. Evan Frey tripled to center to start the inning. Harbin followed with an RBI single.

The Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Konradt Schmidt walked with one out and scored on a double by Eli Rumler. Frey followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin (6-8) scored their first run in the top of the third. Three straight singles by Blake Ochoa, Daniel Carroll, and Edilio Colina loaded the bases. An infield grounder by Calvin Beamon knocked in Ochoa.

Beamon was also involved in the second Rattler run. He doubled with two outs and scored on Alex Liddi's single to right.

But the Hawks went back up by two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Harbin homered off Rattler reliever Michael Pineda to lead off the inning and give South Bend a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the eighth. Alex Liddi singled with one out and Joe Dunigan followed with a double to put runners at second and third. A balk by Chad Beck allowed Liddi to score and moved Dunigan to third. Beck got the second out, but Juan Diaz singled to left to drive in Dunigan and tie the game 4-4.

South Bend took the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the based against Jake Wild on a single, a walk, and a bunt single. Ramon Ramirez drove in the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly off Ryan Moorer for a 5-4 lead.

Ochoa started the Rattler ninth with a double off Evan Scribner. However, Scribner closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder back to the mound.

Game two of the series is set for Tuesday morning. Juan Ramirez (0-1, 2.89) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Jarrod Parker (0-1, 1.59) is set to go for South Bend. Game time is 10:30am EDT/ 9:30am CDT.
